UCP must return to social conservatism and moderate fiscal policies of Peter Lougheed

By Letter to the Editor on October 19, 2017.

Re: “Fiscal conservatives haven’t had a voice in Alberta for 20 years,” Oct. 12

Although, Ralph Klein described himself as a fiscal conservative, he more often talked the talk than walked the walk. He kept taxes high by fighting for tax-funded abortion, and he brought in health care premiums for seniors.

Klein’s socially liberal views on alcohol resulted in several “bozo eruptions.” Late in the 1980s, he was photographed in a Calgary bar drinking with two members of the Grim Reapers Motorcycle Club to be patched over to the Hells Angels. Years later, this photo was used against him by the Hells Angels when he objected to them patching over two motorcycle clubs in Alberta in 1997. Klein considered making it legal to carry open liquor in the cabs of motor vehicles. In an embarrassing incident in 2001, a drunken Klein berated people in an Edmonton homeless shelter for being unemployed. Pressure from within the party eventually forced him to resign.

As big a bozo as Klein was, there is an even bigger one in office in Ottawa, Justin Trudeau. There is a picture of Trudeau on the Internet marching in a sex-parade and giving a topless woman a piggyback ride.

Brian Jean and Doug Schweitzer are running for the leadership of the United Conservative Party. Both naively believe they can bring the party back to power by following the fiscal policies of Ralph Klein and the social policies of Justin Trudeau.

Schweitzer’s plan to shrink the party by kicking out social conservatives (i.e. Christians) won’t expand its base of support. Neither will going full hog and marching in Pride parades.

The party must return to social conservatism and the moderate fiscal policies of Peter Lougheed.

Well said Del. My family had known Klein since the early 1960s and knew what a jerk he was and he certainly proved. it. If we don’t get this province back of the path Lougheed had put us on we will never get out of this “Horrific Mess’ as Lougheed called it.

You don’t need to be a genius to understand what we lost because of what these Reformers have done to us and you would have to be a damn fool to support them. Look at what Norway an Alaska has accomplished with their oil wealth, while they gave ours away.
