Valuable science info available if people take the time to look

By Letter to the Editor on September 16, 2017.

Re: “Important to stay abreast of advancing science,” Sept. 7

Thank you to Fred Lewis for his letter in which I was glad to read him urging others to become informed about scientific information. His letter dealt with human gender and gender identity but, more broadly, there is high-quality scientific information readily available on many other subjects, such as how human activity contributes to global warming.

If some people do not want to be informed, that is their right. Those who choose to remain ignorant on any given subject, however, overreach greatly if they expect government policy to be based merely on their uninformed opinions and beliefs. Governments make policy decisions that affect me and all others. I want those decisions to be based on the best information. The best information, applied to solving a problem, will always lead to the best results.

Additionally, and regarding not scientific but legal information, it was welcome and refreshing to read the guest column by Elizabeth Strange, regarding human rights, in the Sept. 6 News. Thank you to her. It is nice to read something written by someone who knows what she writes about, especially on an esoteric subject like human rights.
