Collector’s Corner: Uncirculated sets: What a collector should look for

By Ron Schmidt on March 28, 2026.

I have told you about circulation coins that are more valuable because of low mintage or varieties, but now I would like to tell you about sets that you need to look out for.

In the uncirculated or proof like sets the first one that comes to my mind is the 1973 Large bust. The small-bust design on the 1973 25 cent coin was a one year issue used with the 100 year anniversary design of the RCMP.

A small number were mistakenly struck with the large bust design, used in the years before and after 1973. In 1999 the regular set includes the Nunavut 2-dollar reverse with a raised border surrounding the inner core.

The 2-dollar reverse in the Mule set was struck using the Silver Proof set die, one without this raised border ring. The 2007 uncirculated set has the 10 cent coin as a variety.

The regular sets have the curved 7 on the dime. Other mint sets of that year may contain the straight 7 and coins with similar finish but it is only the seven coin uncirculated set with the straight 7 on the ten cent where there should be a premium paid.

There has been found recently in the 1967 unc. set that the five cent coin had been struck with dies with a 90 degree rotation. The silver dollar in the same year may also have up to a 90 deg rotation.

The Vancouver Olympic obverse was paired with the Paralympics wheelchair curling reverse to create a mule. This coin was not issued for circulation, but it is found in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic brilliant unc set of 2007.

In the 2005 set with a non Magnetic cent is also very valuable. In 2016 there was 2015 Loon placed in the 2016 set making this set worth over $150.00

At this time I would like to remind you of our Spring Show & Sale on April 18 at the stampede grounds, under the grandstand. See you there!
