The Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat received its charter from Kiwanis International Dec. 5, 1924 and our members have been performing community service in Medicine Hat and district for 102 years. We would like to thank the Medicine Hat News for providing the opportunity of a column to highlight different projects, events and programs sponsored by our club. Since 1973, our club has sponsored the Southeast Alberta Science Fair, which is organized by the Praxis Science Outreach Society. Our members volunteer at the event by helping to set up, checking in students and attending at activities for the students while the judging is taking place. Our club also provides the funds for two students and a chaperone to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair, which is a week long event, this year being held in Edmonton, May 23-30. A science fair project helps to foster a student’s interest in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). It introduces and develops concepts such as the scientific method, project management, data collection and analysis, research methods, and public speaking. Schools in the region hold their own science fairs and students can then register to enter their projects in the Southeast Alberta Science Fair scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 21 at the Medicine Hat College. Last year there were 125 projects registered. The students compete at the elementary (Grade 4-6), junior (Grade 7-8), intermediate (Grades 9-10) and senior (Grades 11-12) levels. Participants in all grade categories are eligible to win certificates, prizes, and special awards. Judging is provided by volunteer scientists, engineers, and other professionals under the supervision of the chief judge. Each year up to five students at the junior, intermediate, and senior levels are selected to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair. At the CWSF, students will take part in competitions, field trips, and social opportunities with approximately 500 of the top young scientists in Canada. This opportunity provides students with a chance to win national level prizes and scholarships at major universities. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer as a judge, you can find more information on the Praxis Science Outreach Society’s website, praxismedhat.com/science-fair, or perhaps you would like to attend the Science Fair at Medicine Hat College on Mar. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and see what great projects our future scientists have prepared. The Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat provides opportunities for our members to volunteer in the community on projects that benefit youth and improve the community.
