Listen, I love all our exhibition venues equally- from senior centres in rural communities, to public libraries in big cities – but there really is something special about the Yuill Family Gallery at Medalta.

With its brick walls, filtered sunlight, and location within the layered historical presence that is Medalta, I don’t think you could blame me for a bit of favouritism! We’re very lucky to say that Medalta has been a long-time venue for TREX exhibitions over the last fourteen years.

In my time with the program, our annual trek over to install exhibitions there has become somewhat of a highly anticipated deep-winter tradition.

Taking time to think about which narratives can be teased out further through certain artwork placements, configuring walls to create interesting spatial experiences for visitors – I always find installation periods at Medalta to be highly playful and contemplative.

This year, as we shift to a springtime program of TREX exhibitions at Medalta, that excitement carries through, especially with the addition of a Public Reception and interactive exhibition elements for the public to enjoy.

From Mar. 6 to Apr. 4, our two TREX shows, The Looking Glass and Collision Course are on view at the Yuill Family Gallery. The Looking Glass, an exploration into the utility of reflection as a tool to situate oneself within reality, and Collision Course, a look into the dynamic process and aftermaths of collage-making.

As interactive accompaniments to these exhibitions we offer the Room of Mirrors, encouraging visitors to step into their own world of self-reflection (literally, and introspectively).

As well, a Collage-Making Station inviting visitors of all ages to create their collages and to add to the community collage wall.

We’re looking forward to celebrating together on Mar. 6 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception for the exhibitions where artists and curators will be in attendance for conversation throughout the evening.

Enjoy light refreshments, a bar with drinks available for purchase, and live music from a local performer. Dance, chat, and have a look at some great art!
