Eye on the Esplanade: Madness at the Esplanade

By Tobie Laliberte on November 18, 2022.

Tonight is Midnight Madness Downtown Medicine Hat, and from the look of all the activities I’ve seen on social media, it’s going to be a good one! The Esplanade wasn’t always fully involved in Midnight Madness, but we are making up for it this year big time!

So what’s going on at the Esplanade? We have an array of free activities planned for in and out of the building, and we have organized events in other facilities downtown such as TREX Space, Ewart Duggan House, Monarch Theatre and Towne Square.

Here’s what’s happening:

Midnight Madness at TREX Space | #2 516 3rd Street SE | 4 p.m.-Late

Enjoy an opening reception of Pretend Foraging in Sleeved Blankets, a collection of imaginative drawings, colourful animations and cozy mini quilts by Lethbridge artist Grace Wirzba. Get creative at our drop-in art station where we’ll have a Pinwheel Quilt Block workshop inspired by the exhibition. While you’re here, warm up with hot coco from our complimentary Hot Chocolate Bar.

Midnight Madness at the Monarch Theatre | Frozen II | 2 Shows | 4 and 8 p.m.

The Esplanade is bringing a FREE viewing of Frozen II. Sing along to your favourite Anna and Elsa songs with the help of Glass Slipper’s frozen princess sisters. Themed concession snacks available for purchase.

Don’t have the time to check out the full movie, but would still like to meet your favourite sibling duo? Check out the ice carving event on the Esplanade front lawn between 6 and 7 p.m. and you might catch a glimpse or even a photo or two.

Frozen on First | 4:30-9:30 p.m.

Join beloved local artist Marina Cole and Calgary based ice sculptor Andrew Zoller on the front lawn as they carve holiday magic from over 2000 pounds of ice! Drop by from 6-7 p.m. and you may spy Glass Slipper’s favourite frozen princess sisters between appearances at the showings of Frozen II at the Monarch Theatre.

XMAS at the Ewart Duggan House | 4:30-9:30 p.m.

The historic Ewart Duggan House is decked out for the holidays! Enjoy the warm glow and charming atmosphere of one of Medicine Hat’s most beloved historic houses over a complimentary cider and cookies.

Public Reception with artist and curators | 7-9 p.m.

Celebrate with us two amazing exhibitions: The Hand and the Letter and Petra Malá Miller: Living in the Zone. Enjoy live music by Logan Straub, hors-d’oeuvre and refreshments, bar service, plus exhibition curators and contributing artists will be present. In conjunction with The Hand and the Letter, there will be a desk for children to write a letter to Santa, drop it in the antique mailbox in the gallery and receive a small present.

Towne Square | 6 p.m.

Join Mayor Linnsie Clark for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. This year, gather in the square for the best view of the tree, and enjoy vendors and DJ.

One last thing, the Esplanade is also hosting Medicine Hat Firehall Theatre with their show The Little Mermaid at 7:30 p.m. that night, so it will be busy place! Join in the madness!
