We were on a recent visit to Toronto and among our list of things to do were the CN Tower, watch a Blue Jays home game and of course visit the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Hockey Hall of Fame is celebrating its 75/25 anniversary this year. (75 years since it’s inception and 25 years since moving to its current location inside Brookfield Place and a historic Bank of Montreal building). The Hall of Fame has exhibits of players, teams, the NHL records, memorabilia, and NHL trophies, as well as interactive games for visitors to play.

It was pouring rain as we made our way to the Hall of Fame early Monday morning, our plan was to spend the entire day there. While checking out the display “The Mask” we noticed another visitor who looked very familiar. Named one of the 100 greatest NHL players in history, Grant Fuhr is a five-time Stanley Cup winner, seven-time all-star, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. Grant was in Toronto to attend the premier of “Making Coco: the Grant Fuhr Story” at the Toronto International Film Festival and was at the Hall of Fame with his family. The film will also premier at the Calgary International Film Festival on Sept 29. We stopped and talked to Grant for a few minutes, had our picture taken with him and also admired one of his Stanley Cup rings he was wearing. In such esteem surroundings such as the Hockey Hall of Fame, it was a tremendous thrill to meet Grant.

To top off an already exciting day, we still had the Holy Grail of Hockey, the Stanley Cup to see. The Stanley Cup and all of the NHL trophies are located in the historic Bank of Montreal building called the Great Hall. There are three official Stanley Cups, the original from 1892 is displayed in the bank vault along with the retired bands. A replica of the cup is put on display for part of the year when the presentation cup travels outside the Hall of Fame. For anyone who loves hockey being in the Great Hall with all the NHL trophies is quite amazing. For the better part of an hour we had our picture taken with the Stanley Cup, checked out our favourite teams and players on each of the trophies. If you’re a hockey fan, a visit to the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame is well worth the trip, for us it was an awesome experience.

Wow, the Stanley Cup and Grant Fuhr all in one day.
