Your Travels: Visit Tripoli before the crowds gather

Tripoli, Libya has potential to be a desired tourist destination. This city of six million lies on the azure brilliance of the Mediterranean. With its temperate climate, ancient culture, and its proximity to Europe, it could be an ideal tourist destination. Unfortunately at this time with the recent Arab Spring in 2011, it is still too unstable for tourism, and the only foreigners allowed are those who are employed in Libya.

I was fortunate to have the experience to visit this primarily Muslim country when I was offered a principalship to help set up a newly opened private school. Although I stayed for only two months, I was able to experience the culture and able to get to know the people.

Before I left for Libya, my only concern was about the food, which turned out to be totally unfounded. The meals were fresh, flavourful and absolutely delicious. Although there were many wonderful restaurants, I had two favourites.

At one eatery, we sat on the patio overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean and enjoyed strawberry juice made entirely of fresh strawberries, and fresh salads which were slightly different every time. Another favourite restaurant was set beside the Marcus Aurelius Roman Arch. We enjoyed lamb baked in clay, dips of hummus, and barbecued lamb in the warm evening as the call to prayer echoed over the city. Inshallah, Tripoli will be able to become a tourist destination one day so everyone can enjoy this exotic location.
