Official Contest Rules

Who Can Enter?

You are eligible if you are 18 years of age or older as of December 31, 2013, and are a legal Canadian resident residing within the City of Medicine Hat our surrounding area, including Redcliff, Cypress County and the County of 40 Mile.

You are not eligible to enter and will be disqualified if:

  • You are or ever have been a food professional, such as a chef, food writer, culinary specialist or educator, or someone who creates recipes for pay (including but not limited to the sale of food products made from your original recipes).
  • You graduated from a culinary school/program or if you are enrolled in a culinary school/program at any time between January 1 and April 30, 2014.
  • You or a member of your immediate family (parent, children, siblings, spouse, regardless of where they live) are an employee of the Alberta Newspaper Group, Leon’s, TSG Insurance, or any other sponsors of the Contest or any of their respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, or any promotion, advertising, judging or public relations company doing business with any of the above, or any of their respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, or you live in the same household of such employees (whether related or not).

How Do I Enter?

Email us a short essay (300 words maximum) at top@medicinehatnews.com about why you are Medicine Hat’s Top Home Chef. Whether you have a culinary flair or have the knack for grilling the best burger in the southeast we want to know about your talents and skills.

Along with your essay submit a recipe for a three course dinner made up of an appetizer, entree and dessert with photos of each course (max. File size 1MB).

Deadline for emailed entries is Saturday, March 15th, 2014.

The Contest

Once all entries have been compiled our internal judges at the Medicine Hat News will narrow the candidates down to three finalists.

The three finalists will prepare their three course dinner for our panel of four judges in their own home. Finalists will host a dinner party for the judges and be scored on presentation, taste, creativity and appeal.
The final winner will be deemed Medicine Hat’s Top Home Chef and receive prizes from our sponsors with a retail value of $1,000. Prizes must be accepted as awarded and all decisions made by the judges panel are binding and final.
Potential Finalists will be required to sign an affidavit of eligibility, a confidentiality agreement and a liability release/assignment of rights and return within 48 hours of receipt of notification. All finalists will be required to sign a release to have their recipes, photos and contest experience reported and promoted within the Medicine Hat News and publications of the Alberta Newspaper Group.

The Top Home Chef Challenge is conducted by the Medicine Hat News and Alberta Newspaper Group LP, 3257 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, T1B 3R2.
