WHL roundup: Cougars pounce on Blazers to net 5-3 win

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Zac Funk and Carlin Dezainde each scored twice and Keaton Dowhaniuk added three assists as the Prince George Cougars defeated the visiting Kamloops Blazers 5-3 on Sunday in Western Hockey League action at the CN Centre.

Bauer Dumanski also scored for the B.C. Division-leading Cougars (33-15-0-2), who entered the third period trailing 3-2. Ondrej Becher chipped in with two assists.

Emmitt Finnie, Max Sullivan and Ryan Michael scored for the Blazers (14-29-3-2), who were outshot 36-14. Jordan Keller chipped in with two assists.

PATS 7 REBELS 6 (SO)

REGINA, Sask. – Braxton Whitehead and Tanner Howe scored in the shootout as the Regina Pats edged the visiting Red Deer Rebels 7-6.

Tye Spencer scored twice in regulation for the Pats (18-25-4-2), while Sam Oremba, Zackary Shantz, Zach Moore and Howe scored added singles.

Kai Uchacz scored three goals for the Rebels (27-15-1-6), while Mats Lindgren, Kalan Lind and Frantisek Formanek added singles.

BLADES 3 WHEAT KINGS 1

SASKATOON, Sask. – Egor Sidorov scored twice as the Saskatoon Blades outlasted the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 3-1.

Vaughn Watterodt also scored for the Blades (36-9-2-3), who outshot the Wheat Kings 35-34.

Luke Shipley scored for the Wheat Kings (24-19-5-1). The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and the Blades took a 2-1 lead into the third.

HITMEN 8 OIL KINGS 1

CALGARY, Alta. – Carson Wetsch scored three goals and Ben Kindel added four assists as the Calgary Hitmen blitzed the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 8-1.

Carter Yakemchuk added two goals for the Hitmen (21-19-6-1), while Tyson Greenway, Keets Fawcett and Ethan Moore added singles. Oliver Tulk had three assists, while Reese Hamilton and Fawcett each had two helpers.

Adam Jecho scored for the Oil Kings (16-28-2-1), who were outshot 42-27.

EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips spotted the visiting Wenatchee Wild and early power-play goal then stormed back with six unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 victory.

Dominik Rymon, Julius Miettinen, Ben Hemmerling, Hayden Smith, Caden Brown and Teague Patton scored for the Silvertips (33-17-1-2). Tarin Smith chipped in with two assists.

Evan Friesen scored for the Wild (27-18-4-0), who were outshot 33-29.

WINTERHAWKS 5 AMERICANS 2

PORTLAND, Ore. – Gabe Klassen and Tyson Jugnauth each had a goal and assist, James Stefan chipped in with three assists and the Portland Winterhawks beat the visiting Tri-City Americans 5-2.

Luca Cagnoni, Marek Alscher and Kyle Chyzowski also scored for the Winterhawks (34-12-2-1), who outshot the Americans 38-29.

Jordan Gavin and Carter MacAdams scored for the Americans (18-28-2-1), who trailed 3-0 after the first period and 5-0 heading into the third.

THUNDERBIRDS 5 ROYALS 3

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle Thunderbirds scored the first three goals of the game then held on to beat the visiting Victoria Royals 5-3.

Sam Popowich, Sawyer Mynio, Nishaan Parmar, Brayden Holberton and Antonio Martorana scored for the Thunderbirds (18-26-2-0).

Dawson Pasternak, Teydon Trembecky and Casper Evensen Haugen scored for the Royals (25-17-4-4).

CHIEFS 8 ROCKETS 5

SPOKANE, Wash. – Berkly Catton and Carter Streek each scored twice as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the visiting Kelowna Rockets 8-5.

Rasmus Ekström, Conner Roulette, Brayden Crampton and Coco Armstrong also scored for the Chiefs (19-24-4-0).

Hiroki Gojsic scored three goals for the Rockets (22-24-3-0), while Tij Iginla added two goals.
