Rattler Roundup: MHC women’s hockey loses first-round series with Rustlers

The Medicine Hat College women’s hockey team got their first taste of ACAC playoff action over the weekend.

The Rattlers, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in program history, faced the No. 1 seed Lakeland College Rustlers in a best-of-three series. They lost Game 1 Friday 6-1 before falling 8-1 in Game 2 Saturday, ending their postseason.

Aivry Thomas scored on a power play in Game 1, Anna Stewart started and made 39 saves. Sarah Shields made seven saves in relief.

In Game 2, Gracie Soderstrom scored on a third period power play for the Rattlers lone marker, Shields started in net before Stewart took over and made 34 saves.

Lakeland College will face the Red Deer Polytechnic in the best-of-five, ACAC championship finals.

Indoor Track

The Rattlers indoor cross country team raced in Lethbridge on Saturday.

Daniel Friesen finished first in the men’s 300m with a 36.99 second run, finishing 1.84 seconds ahead of second place finisher Wayne Bauluck from Lethbridge College. Friesen also finished second in the men’s 60m.

Reyna Woodruff ran in the lead pack in the women’s 1,500m through the first 600m of the race, before she pulled ahead and took first with a personal best time of 5:26.39.

Collectively, the Rattlers men finished third among the eight ACAC schools and the Rattlers women placed fifth.

The Rattlers runners head to Edmonton on Saturday and Sunday for the ACAC Championship meet.

Basketball

The Rattlers men’s basketball team faced Concordia University of Edmonton on Friday in a rescheduled game.

They lost 96-92 in double overtime. Ethan Robinson had 27 points and seven rebounds and Wol Wol had 23 points with 14 rebounds for a double double.

They finish the ACAC season with a 10-11 record.
