The Monsignor McCoy Colts Sr. football got a long awaited taste of being on the positive side of a blowout.
The Colts had a field day of success Saturday, blanking the Lacombe Rams 50-0 at the Methanex Bowl.
Head coach Jole Krassman credits the Colts’ culture in their turnaround this season, with Saturday’s win their third through four games.
“We’ve got kids that are believing in our systems,” Krassman said. “We’ve got kids that are rising up to the challenge and are just walking around with confidence. It’s definitely culture, and it’s confidence. We’re starting to get it and we’re starting to feel it and and things are starting to change.”
A scoreless first quarter was quickly changed with the Colts putting up 32 points before the half.
Carsen MacDonald scored a rushing touchdown that was capped off with a two-point conversion. Carlin Messmer threw a touchdown pass to Liam Parsons who later scored a rushing TD.
A field goal and a kick-return touchdown from Baker Thompson gave the Colts their early lead.
They started the third quarter off with a field goal before Messmer created offence on defence, picking off the Lacombe quarterback for a touchdown. The Colts gained a single point on a tackle in the end zone after a missed field goal.
They rounded out the game with a passing touchdown from Mason Scory to Keagan Surovy.
“We had a lot of our guys coming in, we got to see a lot of our second teams,” Krassman said. “After getting up a little bit we put our seconds in and it just showed that those guys are preparing and that’s the chance for those guys to get better and to show what they’ve been doing in practice.
“They’ve been hanging in here and putting in the work on our starting offence and defence and it’s good to see that hard work paying off them and getting them lots of reps.”
The Colts came into the game off a 52-31 loss to the Medicine Hat High Hawks on Sept. 13. They’re on the road this week, heading to Lethbridge to face the Catholic Central Cougars.
Krassman says they’ll get back to work early in the week ahead of the matchup, a first time opponent for himself.
“We’re going to get into the film and we have to prepare and set up a strategy and the game plan for them,” Krassman said. “I’ve never played them as a coach, so it’s going to be a learning experience, but hopefully it’s a positive one for us.”
