Rattlers Roundup: Valk wins second-straight ACAC golf regional

Medicine Hat College golfer Michael Valk is back to his winning ways already.

Valk, the 2023 ACAC golfer of the year, won his second straight regionals to kick off the 2024 season with a win this weekend at the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club.

The Rattlers golfer finished atop the leaderboard as the only player under par, shooting one under on the two-day tournament. He had the two lowest scores of the weekend, shooting a 68 and 67 on Saturday and Sunday.

MHC had six other men’s golfers, Jace Shannon finished tied for seventh at +14 (76, 74), Rylan Hodgson tied for 15th at +21 (77, 80). Keelan Burzminski finished 26th at +31 (87, 80), Rylan Montgomery was 30th (+39, 96, 79), Isaac Stehr finished 31st (+40, 88, 88) and Josh Burzminski was 33rd at +48 (93, 91).

The Rattlers men’s team finished in second, behind SAIT.

Ava Bradfold was the Rattlers’ top women’s finisher, coming fifth at +53 (96, 93). Emma Arndt was sixth (+61, 103, 94), Kiara Reesor finished seventh (+65, 104, 97), Taryn Sanderson was eighth ((+66, 98, 104) and Julia Beaton was 10th (+79, 107, 108).

The Rattlers women’s team finished third.

The ACAC golf championship gets underway Sept. 22, finishing Sept. 24, hosted at the Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer.

Soccer

The Rattlers men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday and Olds College on Sunday.

The men’s team got their season underway with a loss and a tie.

Joao Cintra scored twice in the loss to Red Deer. Stefan Vrska made four saves.

Cintra scored the lone goal in the tie with Olds, Vrska made six saves.

MHC’s women’s team also lost to Red Deer and tied with Olds College.

Alexis Ratke had a goal and an assist in the 8-2 loss to Red Deer. Keandra Leslie scored the other Rattlers goal, Abby Lalach made seven saves.

Keeley Zambon scored the lone goal in the tie, Lalach made eight saves.

The women (1-1-1) host the University of Alberta-Augustana on Saturday at 1 p.m. before heading to Ambrose on Sunday to face the Lions. The men (0-1-1) also face Ambrose on Sunday.
