The Crescent Heights Vikings couldn’t carry momentum Friday night.

The Vikings Sr. football team had ups and downs in a 10-7 loss to the Brooks Buffaloes at the Methanex Bowl.

Head coach Anthony Anderson says they leave the game with some points to work on.

“A little assignment stuff that we need to do,” Anderson said. “We need to clean up tackling, blocking, stuff like that. But we need to really make sure that we hammer down on the little things next week.”

Crescent Heights came into the game off a 30-14 loss the previous Friday to the Monsignor McCoy Colts in the fourth annual Rick Boksteyn bowl.

Friday night, both team’s defences held one another at bay. The only scores in the first half came in the second quarter. Brooks capitalized with a rouge and took two points on a safety.

Anderson commended his defence in the loss.

“We didn’t give up, that’s the biggest thing,” Anderson said. “That’s all we ask for the guys, they didn’t give up. Obviously a little bit bummed out about the outcome, but I’m not upset with their effort.”

The Vikings grabbed a brief lead in the second half.

Jayden James returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter, running all the way to the house for the score. A converted field goal and Crescent Heights grabbed the 7-3 lead.

Brooks regained the lead in the same quarter with a rushing touchdown, jumping ahead 10-7.

Crescent Heights pushed throughout the second half, with both Rowen Sparks and Cole Freeman picking off the Brooks quarterback.

But it was turnovers from the Vikings that limited the comeback bid.

The Vikings are back at the Methanex Bowl next week, hosting Winston Churchill on Sept. 20. Anderson says they’ll put in the work next week and look to carry momentum into the contest.

“We saw a lot of positives tonight, we just have to keep building on those,” Anderson said. “Keep building on people’s confidence.”

Colts v. Hawks

The Monsignor McCoy Colts hosted the Medicine Hat High Hawks in a game immediately after the Vikings contest.

The Colts (2-0) entered the game off the Boksteyn Bowl win over Crescent Heights. Hat High (1-1) entered looking to bounce back from a 53-10 loss to Holy Trinity Academy last Friday.

That game was not complete by press time.

The Colts’ next contest is Sept. 21 when they host the Lacombe Rams. Hat High plays host to the LCI Rams on Sept. 20.
