Ringette roundup: U19 Live Wire finish second at ringette provincials

Medicine Hat’s U19 Live Wire fell just short of winning back-to-back ringette provincial championships.

The Live Wire finished in second place at their provincials over the weekend in Beaumont, losing 6-4 to the Lethbridge Rattlers.

They opened the tournament with a 10-1 win Friday over the Cochrane Rockies.

Hannah Thompson had five goals, Kayla Robinson tallied three of her own and both Sophie Kerr and Mackenzie Tindall scored as well.

They carried the momentum into a 8-4 win later in the day over Sherwood Park-1.

Kasey Martin and Kam Ried scored twice in the win with Grace Ammann, Robinson and Thompson each scoring as well.

The Live Wire faced Sherwood Park-2 on Saturday, coming away with a 6-5 overtime win on a goal from Robinson 2:31 into overtime. Her game winner completed a hat trick in the win.

Natasha Unreiner, Avery Weisgerber, Thompson and Kerr all scored solo markers in the win as well.

They carried the OT win into a 5-1 victory later in the day Saturday, beating Beaumont Rush 5-1. Kerr and Robinson had two goals each and Kam Reid scored as well.

The Live Wire opened play Sunday and punched their ticket to the gold medal game with a 7-2 win over the Bow View Bobcats.

Kerr and Ammann had two goals each and both Mackenzie Tindall and Weisgerber found twine.

In the gold medal game, Robinson and Thompson each scored for the Live Wire.

Kyrie Stern-Rebmann stood tall in net all weekend.

The Live Wire finish their season with a 43-2-2 record, winning all four tournaments they played in. They were also presented with the Chinook Ringette League championship banner over the weekend for the best record.

U14

The U14 Medicine Hat Mayhem travelled to Calgary for provincials, finishing seventh.

Sophia Smith and Jacqueline LeBlanc shared the time between the pipes over the weekend.

The Mayhem started off the weekend with an 8-5 win against Red Deer. Brea Butterfield and Breanna Lanuk each recorded hat tricks and both Lacey Gibney and Jillian Stodalka found twine.

In their second game, the Mayhem lost 7-6 to Sherwood Park. Lanuk scored three times, Butterfield scored twice and Sloane Berstad found the back of the net.

In the Mayhem’s third round-robin game, they lost to Calgary North West 9-5.

Butterfield scored twice and each of Gibney, Lanuk and Berstad scored solo markers.

Medicine Hat won their crossover game against Bow View, 4-3. Berstad had a hat trick and Lanuk scored a solo marker.

The Medicine Hat Mayhem moved on to play for seventh place against Sherwood Park, winning 8-2.

Gibney scored four times and all of Lanuk, Berstad, Onyka Funk and Tia Van Maarion scored as well.

U12

The U12 Royals were on the road at provincials this weekend, playing four games.

The Royals came out strong in their first game of the round robin, beating Airdrie 6-3. Rielle Forsyth scored three times and Rhya Weinberger, Haven Ward and Sadie Sackman scored as well.

The Royals lost their second game, falling 10-3 to Rockford. Arika McDowall, Jorja Sadler and Katie-Lee Sehn all scored solo markers.

They dropped their third game, 10-3 to Indus-1. Sadler had two goals and McDowall found twine as well.

The Royals needed to win their fourth game to move on but fell short of a comeback, losing 10-5 to the Indus-2. Sadler had a hat trick and both Sehn and McDowall scored solo markers.

Grace Stirling was in net for the weekend.
