The Medicine Hat U13 Tier 2 Hounds returned home from provincials with gold and a new banner to hang.

The Hounds beat the host Slave Lake Thunder 7-3 in the finals Sunday, overcoming the hometown crowd to capture gold.

Medicine Had led 3-1 after 20 minutes and added another two goals in the second to lead 5-1 through 40. Slave Lake answered back in the third with a couple of goals but the Hounds rattled off two more to secure the title.

Bentley Thares and Carter Perry each had two goals and an assist, Marley Ward had a goal with two assists and both Emerson Kurtz and Coen Kanewischer had a goal and an assist. Masynn Rodas had three helpers in the gold-winning game, and Jarik Young made 24 saves.

“This year has been a journey and we couldn’t have gotten this far without the team bond that we all made early on in the season,” Hounds captain Emerson Kurtz said. “Even when we were down in a game, no one gave up and we fought harder.”

The Hounds opened their provincials run with a 5-5 draw Friday with the Glenlake Hawks 2 Blue.

Ward had three goals and both Brody Jarvis and Kaspar Copeland found the back of the net. No goalie stats were recorded.

The Hounds followed the tie up with a 3-2 win Saturday morning over the Vegreville Wranglers. Rodas scored twice and Ward found the back of the net. Young made 17 saves.

They carried the momentum into a 5-4 win later in the day over St. Albert.

Emerson Kurtz and Ward each had a goal and an assist and both Rodas and Copeland scored a solo marker. Young made 17 saves for the win.

The Hounds punched their ticket to the finals with a 4-2 win Sunday morning against the undefeated Airdrie Lightning. Copeland led the offence in the win with two goals, Kurtz and Thares each scored as well. Young made 27 saves in the victory.
