Ringette roundup: MH Smash Open defend provincial championship

The Medicine Hat Smash Open repeated as provincial champions over the weekend.

The Smash defended their provincial B open championship with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon over the St. Albert Edge, capturing a fourth straight title.

Kailyn Baum scored twice in the gold Final, with singles from Mahala St Jacques, Nicona Lutz, and Alyssa Kopec. Tyler Leidal stood tall for the Smash between the pipes.

To get to the finals, the Smash opened their round robin with a 6-4 loss to the Calgary Tigers. Kylie Kallenberger, Baum, Leidal and Kim Serfas all scored and Tyler Leidal played in goal.

They defeated the Edmonton Thunder 7-1 in their second game. Baum and Kayty Leidal had two goals each, with Lutz, St Jacques, and Kallenberger potting one each. Mark Fisher played in net.

In their last round robin game, the Smash prevailed 6-5. Baum lit it up with four goals, with St Jacques tallying one and the game winner coming from Lutz. Tyler Leidal

stood tall in the net.

The Smash punched their ticket to the gold final with a 4-0 win over RQB Twisters. Baum had two goals, and both Stanke and Kayty Leidal had one each. Tyler Leidal earned the shutout.

Baum was the scoring leader in the tournament with 15 points in five games.

U12

The U12B Fury continued their late season surge on the weekend winning two exhibition games against the Lethbridge U12-2 Rattlers in Lethbridge.

Danna Sawcuk was in net for both games.

The first game was a back and forth battle with the Fury pulling out an 8-7 win. Kassidy Etienne and Ally Martin each had two goals and all of Annalise Robins, Brinley Cross, Peyton Howes and Arika MacDowall scored as well.

They won their second game 14-7. Etienne scored five times, Martin tallied four goals, Olivia Ulbricht had three markers and both Cross and Howes found the back of the net.

The Fury are in action at regionals in Lethbridge again this weekend.

U10

The U10 Step 3 Gators wrapped up their season this year with a tournament in Lethbridge. They lost their four contest with goals coming from Sloan Loehndorf with two and all three of Charlie Lowe, Lexxon Martinez and Zoe Aarden finding twine.

The U10 Step 2 Gators finished out the season at the Lethbridge Bridge tournament, finishing in a tie in the C final against Okotoks. Jalya-Ray Klaudt made over 75 saves in her time in goal and scored six goals herself for the weekend.

Nora Dunn and Kylee Drever each had four goals, Maizee Trotter and Blaire Dirk scored three times each and Lexi Aldred and Katie Langston each helped with their single goals over the weekend.

The Medicine Hat U10 Gators Green and Gold took the ice for the last time this season at the Lethbridge tournament.
