Eight Hatters win gold at Alberta Winter Games

Medicine Hat was well represented at the 2023 Alberta Winter Games.

Eight Hatters won gold and 20 total athletes medaled at the provincial games held in Grand Prairie last weekend.

The city’s gold medal count was boosted with four female volleyball champions and three local winners in ringette.

Juls Kosinski, Chloe Kube, Teagan Stork and Paisley Retzler took first place in the volleyball tournament and Erika Want, Rebecca Jackiw and Ryleigh Jackiw won gold in the ringette tournament.

Baraa Alyassine took first place in the male 47 kg wrestling competition.

Two Medicine Hat athletes brought home four silver medals. Leighton Wright finished second with Zone 3 in ringette and Chelsia Cooper took second in three artistic gymnastics events, picking up silver medals in all around, bars and floor.

Cooper also picked up one of Medicine Hat’s eight bronze medals, taking third in the vault competition.

Alyassine added a bronze to his gold medal take, finishing third in the wrestling all-around team.

Salah Alkrad, Isaac Streifel, Thorsdon Pettigrew and Drayton Clendenan also all finished third in the wrestling all-around. Clendenan also claimed a bronze in the male 51 kg.

Chloe Stubor took third place in the judo female over 44 kg up to 48 kg competition.

In total, 53 Medicine Hat athletes competed at the Alberta Winter Games. The next provincial games are slated for 2026, the 25th Alberta Summer Games to be hosted in Strathcona County.
