Gavin McKenna stood out in his first appearance in a Hockey Canada jersey.

The 15-year-old Medicine Hat Tigers rookie forward scored twice in regulation and once in the shootout in Canada Red’s 3-2 win over Finland on Wednesday to open their U17 Hockey Challenge.

McKenna scored the first goal for Canada on a 2-on-0 play with Victoria Royals’ rookie Cole Reschny.

In the second period, McKenna chased down a Finnish defender and stole the puck before sniping it top shelf.

He put the puck between the goalie’s legs in the shootout for good measure.

McKenna and Team Red face off against their fellow countrymen, Team White, in a 4 p.m. contest today.

They’ll face Czechia on Saturday (1 p.m.), Sweden on Monday (4 p.m.) and wrap up the preliminaries on Tuesday against the U.S. (4 p.m.).
