Rattler roundup: Rattler cross country runs to middle of pack results

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers cross-country team battled injuries while still picking up results.

The Rattlers cross-country team ran at The Stewart Cup in Camrose on Saturday, finishing middle of the pack while missing team captains Pyper Gill and Jaiden Romanuik.

Becky Ross, as she has done all season, led the Rattlers with a second-place finish in the women’s 6 km event. Ross finished two minutes behind two-time defending CCAA cross-country champion Makenna Fitzgerald from SAIT, who ran her first race of the season.

Other Rattler women taking part in the race included Maddy Scrimger finishing fourth, Mizuki Iwata 24th, Kabri Stickel 32nd and Annika Marhall 34th. Collectively, the MHC women placed fifth.

In the men’s 8 km race, Shintaro Iwata was the top Rattler running, placing 22nd. Tristan Scrimger 27th, Justin Jager 33rd, Spencer Wilson 34th, Gage Smith 36th and Jon McKinley 45th were the other MHC finishers. The men were sixth in the team standings.

Next up for Rattlers running is the ACAC Championships in Lethbridge on Oct. 28.

Soccer

The Rattlers women’s soccer team won their lone contest of the weekend, shutting out the University of Alberta-Augustana 1-0 on Sunday. Keandra Leslie scored at the 64th minute to break the match’s stalemate. Abby Lalach Ade two saves for MHC.

The Rattlers women’s soccer team (4-5-1) head into the final regular season weekend hosting the SAIT Trojans on Saturday before heading to Lethbridge on Sunday to face the Kodiaks.

Hockey

The Rattlers women’s hockey team continued their debut season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference with two games over the weekend. The Rattlers were at Olds College over the weekend, dropping both games 6-1 against the Broncos while scoring their first goals of the season.

In their first contest Saturday, Brynn Kuntz scored the Rattlers’ first official ACAC goal in the loss while Kinlee Fahselt made 35 saves.

Shelby Lee scored the MHC’s only goal in Sunday’s 6-1 loss, with Hayley Whelen making 26 saves between the pipes.

The Rattlers women’s hockey team (0-4) are in action this weekend with a two-game set at NAIT against the Ooks.

Basketball

The Rattlers men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off their seasons over the weekend, hosting the Ambrose Lions at the Snake Pit.

The men’s team lost 90-83 with Fred Kabore leading the scoring with 18 points while collecting four rebounds and two assists.

The women’s team also lost, falling 65-38 against Ambrose. Breanna O’Connor had 13 points with five rebounds and four steals for the Colleges.

The men’s (0-1) and women’s (0-1) basketball teams have a hoe-and-home series this weekend with St. Mary’s University, hosting the Lightning on Friday before hitting the road to face them on Saturday.
