Tigers fall 4-2 Wednesday at Regina

By James Tubb on October 4, 2023.

The Medicine Hat Tigers recorded their first regulation loss Wednesday.

The Tigers lost 4-1 at Regina against the Pats after allowing three goals in the first period. Medicine Hat came into the contest off a 3-2 loss Saturday at Co-op Place in overtime against the Saskatoon Blades.

Regina opened the scoring with Zack Stringer’s first goal of the season, scoring on a power play at the 8:33 mark. The Pats struck just over eight minutes later with Parker Berge’s second goal of the year, making it a 2-0 game.

With 1:13 left in the first frame, Zackary Shantz knocked in a pass from Stringer to secure the 3-0 lead for the Pats after 20 minutes. They outshot Medicine Hat 14-3 after the first frame.

Ethan McCallum made his WHL debut between the pipes as the starter and had 11 saves in the first period before Evan May took over in relief for the second and third. He made six saves in his 36:49 of action.

The Pats added to their lead late in the second period with an insurance goal from Cole Temple, putting Regina ahead 4-0 through 40 minutes of action.

Medicine Hat got on the board early in the third period. Cayden Lindstrom scored on a power play, redirecting a pass from Reid Andresen, to snap the shutout. Oasiz Wiesblatt had the second assist on Lindstrom’s second goal of the year.

The Tigers kept pushing throughout the final frame but it was Regina counting their stingy play that didn’t allow Medicine Hat to mount a full comeback. Brayden Boehm knocked in a loose puck in the last two minutes of play with the goalie pulled to bring the Tigers within two. Shane Smith and Andresen had the assists on Boehm’s second of the season, which ended up being the final goal of the contest as Regina held on for the 4-2 win.

Across the ice from May, Ewan Huet made 32 saves for his second win of the season.

The Tigers (3-1-1) are back in action Friday when they head to Swift Current to face the Broncos.
