The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s hockey team has gained support from the Calgary Flames foundation.

The NHL club’s foundation has pledged $37,500 to help sustain and enhance the first-year program.

The 2023-24 season is the first offering of women’s hockey in MHC’s history and head coach Chad Baron says over the next three years, the Flames foundation donation will help to support their program as they work to establish the team.

“We want to send a huge thank-you to the Calgary Flames Foundation for their commitment and generosity in growing female hockey in Canada,” said Baron in a release. “Their generosity will allow us to better support our athletes through equipment upgrades, team building, mental health training initiatives and many other aspects of the program.”

MHC says a portion of the donation will also provide support to student athletes via financial awards. Ten women’s hockey athletes, equally dedicated to their studies and sport, will be eligible to receive $500 of funding each year.

“Support of post-secondary athletics is a priority for the Calgary Flames Foundation and the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation,” said Candice Goudie, executive director of the Calgary Flames Foundation. “The opportunity to partner with the Rattlers and help support and amplify women’s hockey is a privilege. We are looking forward to the hockey season starting.”

The Rattlers women’s hockey team kicks off the inaugural season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference on Saturday with the first of two home-opener games.

They host the NAIT Ooks for a 7:45 p.m. game Saturday and the SAIT Trojans at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, both games at the Moose Rec. Centre.
