The first night of the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede’s rodeo kicked off Thursday night.
Thursday’s Summer Pro Rodeo not only opened the first off three days of rodeo action but also honoured the military as each night offers its own atmosphere.
Carlee Rae Otero of Collinsville, Tex. led the barrel racing competition after the first night with a 17.30 second ride. Medicine Hat’s Kareen Warren, who raced in the slack performance Thursday morning, sat in second with a 17.60 ride. Justine Elliott of Lacombe also raced in the slack performance, and sat third with a time of 17:78.
Ashley Gunsch of Thorsby, Alta. led the breakaway roping competition after the first night with a 3.1 second ride. Celie Salmond of Choteau, Mont. was in second (3.3 seconds) and Charlee Edge of Marwayne, Alta. Was third with a 4.7 second ride.
Sherwood Park’s Kody Lamb led the bareback competition after night one with an 86.5-point ride on Northcott Yule’s 633 Broken Arrow. Orin Larsen of Inglis, Man. had an 80.5 ride for second place and Ethan Mazurenko of Thorhild, Alta. was the third-place rider with a score of 77.
Dakota Giesbrecht of Cardston led the steer wrestling competition with his 4.3-second ride in the slack performance. Brendan Laye of Consort, Alta. was the second rider with a time of 4.5 seconds. Ty Livingstone of New Norway, Alta. and Wyatt Wilson of Rimbey, Alta., were tied for third with a 4.6-second ride.
Lucas Macza of High River led the saddle bronc competition with an 84.5-point ride on Northcott Yule’s 5 Kicking Rocks. Hayden Cole of Condor, Alta. had an 80 point ride putting him in second place and Jake Burwash of Nanton, Alta. Placed third with a 72 point ride.
The team roping leaders after night one were Tate Schmidt and Kagen Schmidt of Barrhead, Alta. with a 5.7-second run. Keely Bonnett and Logan Bonnett of Ponoka and Levi Simpson (Ponoka) and Logan Cullen (Courtenay, B.C.) were both tied for second with a 6.3 run.
Glentworth, Sask. cowboy Jesse Popescul was the tie-down roping leader after night one with his 9.4-second run. Logan Bird of Nanton, Alta. had a 9.7-second run for second and Kirk Robinson of Red Deer County held onto third place with a 10.2 run.
Edgar Durazo of Moctezuma, Sonora, Mex. held first place in the bull riding competition with an 87.5-point ride on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 721 Jack Knife. Tanner Eno of Coronation, Alta. had an 83-point ride for second place.
Friday’s rodeo, which got underway at 8 p.m., was not complete by press time. Saturday’s rodeo, the final afternoon of competition, gets underway at 1:30 p.m. at the Stampede grounds.
