Mavs split Tuesday doubleheader at Swift Current

The Medicine Hat Mavericks had an evening of .500 baseball Tuesday.

The Mavs won the first game of their double header at Swift Current 6-1 before falling 10-5 in their second matchup of the day against the 57’s.

The doubleheader came to be after the Mavs and 57’s matchup on Saturday was postponed due to a hail storm. Medicine Hat came into Tuesday’s contest of a 4-2 win Sunday at Okotoks against the Dawgs.

Medicine Hat won the first game Tuesday on the back of right fielder Max Valdez who had two home runs for four RBIs and two runs scored in the victory.

Medicine Hat starter Garrett Nicholson picked up a quality start and a win, striking out nine batters while only allowing one runs on two host and four walks across six innings. Casey Henderson worked the seventh inning and struck out a batter in his clean frame.

The second doubleheader game was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands six times. Right fielder Brady Bean and third baseman Nathan Tarver led the offence with two RBIs. Tarver hit a home run in the third inning, his fourth of the season.

Nicholas Spidel started the game for the Mavs and worked four innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Adam Golby took over and pitched 1.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout. Dylan Weaver took the ball and gave up three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout for the loss.

The Mavs (23-24) are back in action and at Athletic Park on Wednesday when they host the Fort McMurray Giants.
