By James Tubb on July 20, 2023.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks continued their winning streak Thursday night in dramatic fashion.

The Mavs won 7-5 in the 11th inning At Brooks against the Bombers for their fifth win in a row. Medicine Hat came into the contest off an off day Wednesday after beating the Moose Jaw Miller Express in two straight games Tuesday and Monday.

Brooks opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. After four scoreless innings the Mavs got on the board and took a lead in the sixth inning. Catcher Max Valdez drove in two runs with a single for the lead.

Tim Carlson started the game for Medicine Hat and worked into the eighth inning for a quality start. He registered eight strikeouts in his 7.1 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Kyle Calzadiaz worked the final two outs of the eighth inning, recording one strikeout while allowing two runs on one hit and a walk.

The Bombers grabbed a lead back in the eighth inning with a three-run frame. Medicine Hat made the game interesting late with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game up at 4-4.

A RBI triple from CF Brody Gardner followed up by an RBI single from designated hitter Brady Bean.

The Mavs capitalized early in the top of the 10th inning with a runner on second base to start the frame due to the WCBL extra inning rules.

Valdez drove in a run with an RBI double to put the Mavs ahead 5-4. Brooks answered back in the bottom of the 10th to send the game to the 11th.

Medicine Hat grabbed the lead in the 11th on a RBI single from Gardner and Valdez scored a run on a bases loaded walk.

Adam Golby entered the game in the ninth and picked up the win on the mound with three innings pitched. He struck out four batters while allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.

The Mavs (21-22) are back in action Friday as they head to Swift Current to face the 57’s.
