American Legion wrap-up: Monarchs come off winning weekend

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs U18 picked up three wins over their weekend of baseball action.

The Monarchs took three of their four contests, opening the weekend with a 6-2 win Friday against the Moose Jaw Canucks. Koby Eskestrand led the way offensively in that win with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Parker Hunt started the game on the mound and picked up a complete game win, striking out four in his seven innings of work.

The Monarchs carried the momentum into Saturday, opening the day with a 5-4 win over the Brandon Marlins. Kayne Olinski and Jeff Bullock each drove in a run with a hit.

Fischer Haysom started the contest and picked up the win, striking out a batter in 6.1 innings pitched. Eskestrand recorded the final two outs of the game.

Medicine Hat’s lone loss of the weekend came Saturday afternoon, falling 13-5 against the Saskatoon Cubs. Ryler Straarup had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored in the loss. Kyle Woolridge started the game and worked 4.2 innings while striking out three. Olinski came into the game in relief, striking out two batters in 1.2 innings. Graceon Little recorded the final two outs.

The Monarchs (18-18) wrapped up the weekend with a 6-2 rematch win over Saskatoon. Trevin Ressler led the offence with an RBI on two hits. Straarup picked up the win on the mound, striking out three batters in three innings of work. Ressler pitched the final four innings with five strikeouts.

Knights

The Medicine Hat Knights are coming of a difficult road weekend, dropping all four contests. They opened the weekend with a 12-6 loss Saturday against the Lewiston Redbirds. Cade Moch led the Knights’ offence with three RBIs on two hits with a run scored. JJ Harnett started the game and struck out one batter in his 1.1 innings pitched. Dylan Amundson worked four innings with two strikeouts and Parker Krauss recorded the final two outs of the game.

The Knights lost their second Saturday game, also against Lewiston, falling 19-1. Dryden Pidlisny led the offence with two hits. Pryce Velichko started the game for the Knights before Wryder Welte took over in the first inning and recorded two strikeouts in his inning pitched. Mace Carrire worked two innings and Talen Crockford recorded a strikeout in his inning pitched.

Medicine Hat lost a close battle Sunday morning, falling 15-14 in a ninth-inning affair against the Great Falls Chargers. Krauss led the offence with three RBIs on two hits and a run scored. Nixon Kunkel started the game and struck out three batters in his 4.2 innings pitched. Pidlisny recorded the final out of the fifth inning and Moch worked one out himself before Velichko took over and pitched the remaining 2.2 innings of the game, striking out one.

The Knights (21-27) wrapped up the weekend with another one-run loss, falling 19-18 against Great Falls. Velichko had five RBIs in the loss, notching three hits and two runs scored. Welte, Landon MacPherson, Krauss and Wade Davies combined for three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
