The Medicine Hat Mavericks fell just short Wednesday night. The Mavericks held on to their final out before ultimately losing 7-6 at Okotoks against the Dawgs. Medicine Hat entered the contest off two days off following a 12-3 loss Sunday at Athletic Park against the Swift Current 57’s. The Mavericks opened the scoring Wednesday with a three-run first inning. First baseman Tyler Vanneste drove in a pair with a two RBI double. The next batter, shortstop Brett Carrell, knocked in Vanneste from second with a double of his own. Okotoks didn’t answer back until the second inning, as they plated two runs in both that frame and the third inning for a 4-3 lead. Medicine Hat plated two runs in the top of the fifth to regain a lead, going up 5-4. Designated hitter Brady Bean drove in a run with RBI single and later scored on an error by the Dawgs shortstop. Okotoks scored in the bottom of the frame to tie the game up at 5-5. Zac Robinson started the game for the Mavericks, working four innings with five strikeouts. Dylan Esquival took over and registered three outs while allowing two runs, putting Okotoks ahead 7-5. Kyle Calzadiaz pitched the remaining innings for the Mavericks with a strikeout. The Mavericks drew within one run in the seventh inning as Vanneste scored on a fielders choice play off the bat of second baseman Johnny Vulcano. Medicine Hat threatened to tie the game up in the ninth inning with a runner on first base but Okotoks pitcher Seth Thompson struck out the side to hold on for the 7-6 win, the Dawgs 13th on the season. The Mavericks (9-11) are back in action at Athletic Park Thursday night as they host the Swift Current 57’s. 9
