The Medicine Hat Mavericks got back in the win column Saturday night. Just 24 hours after losing 18-4 against the Okotoks Dawgs at Athletic Park, the Mavericks bounced back and won 7-2 in Brooks against the Bombers. Medicine Hat scored early and often, getting on the board first and putting up a 4-1 lead after three innings. Mavericks centre fielder Jackson Woolwine scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Brooks notched a solo home run in the same frame to tie the game at 1-1. An inning later Woolwine brought in a run on a bases loaded walk, putting the Mavericks ahead 2-1. That lead was doubled in the third inning on a two-run home run from catcher Dominic VanDoorne, his first of the WCBL season. After a scoreless fourth inning, VanDoorne scored on an error from Brooks’ catcher on a double steal play. The Mavericks added two more runs in the sixth inning with RBI singles from both designated hitter Brody’s Gardner and third baseman Nathan Tarver. Mavericks starting pitcher Bryce Libke worked six innings for his first win and quality start of the season. He had eight strikeouts in his six innings of work, allowing only the one run on the home run for four hits total and two walks against. Lucas Teel came into the game in the seventh and recorded two outs and allowed a run against before Kyle Calzadiaz took over for the final out of the inning. Calzadiaz worked the final two innings, walking two batters and recording a strike to hold the Mavericks 7-2 win. The Mavericks (9-9) are back in action Sunday for a Father’s Day 2:05 p.m. matinee at Athletic Park against the Swift Current 57’s. 10
