The Medicine Hat Mavericks were on the wrong end of a lopsided score Friday.
The Mavericks gave up 18 runs as they lost 18-4 against the Okotoks Dawgs at Athletic Park. Medicine Hat entered the contest off a 7-5 win against the Swift Current 57’s on Thursday.
Okotoks scored all of their 18 runs in the first six innings of the contest, with a seven-run third inning capping off their offensive push. Adam Golby started the game for Medicine Hat and pitched 2.2 innings, striking out a batter while allowing nine runs on four walks and eight hits. Nicholas Spidel came into the game in relief and pitched 2.1 innings with a strikeout while allowing five runs (three earned) on a walk and seven hits.
Jack Suhai came into the game in the sixth inning and worked two frames, allowing four runs on four hits with a walk. Evan Bilter and Lucas Teel combined for the final two innings, each striking out a batter with Teel allowing two hits.
Okotoks had four home runs in their win, with two coming off the bat of Nash Crowell. The Mavericks committed five errors in the game for a league-leading 33 in 17 games.
Medicine Hat’s first run came in the second inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch RBI from centre fielder Jackson Woolwine. They added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles from right fielder Brady Bean and shortstop Johnny Vulcano. The Mavericks fourth and final run came in the bottom of the seventh, with designated hitter Dominic VanDoorne scoring on a RBI single from left fielder Ryan Dousett.
The Mavericks (8-9) are back in action Saturday when they head to Brooks to face the Bombers before hosting Swift Current on Sunday for a Father’s Day 2:05 p.m. matinee.
