It took an extra inning but the Medicine Hat Mavericks came out on top Tuesday night in Swift Current. The Mavericks scored three runs in the 10th inning and held on to beat the 57’s 7-5 to wrap up a stretch of nine-straight games. Medicine Hat entered the contest off a 9-4 loss Monday at Athletic Park against the Fort McMurray Giants. Swift Current opened the scoring in the contest, leading 1-0 after the opening frame. The Mavericks answered back with a run of their own, tying the game up at 1-1 in the third inning on a fielders choice play off the bat of shortstop Tyler Vanneste. Medicine Hat carried the momentum and plated a run in the fourth for a 2-1 lead. First baseman Brent Cota knocked in Brady Bean from third base, one pitch after the second baseman went from first to third base on a single from designated hitter Noah Adams. Swift Current scored in the bottom of the fourth to re-tie the game up. The 57’s grabbed the lead once again with a run in the sixth inning before the Mavericks tied the game up with a run in the eighth inning. Centre fielder Jackson Woolwine plated a run with a RBI single. Medicine Hat jumped ahead in the ninth inning on a two out, solo home run from third baseman Nathan Tarver. Zac Robinson started the game for the Mavericks and almost went the distance, recording a strikeout across eight innings pitched while allowing nine hits and three runs. Nicholas Spidel took over in the ninth inning and recorded two quick outs before Swift Current got a runner on third who scored five pitches later to tie the game up. The 57’s continued their ninth inning push, getting runners on first and third before Casey Henderson took over on the mound and recorded the third out to force extra innings. The extra inning rules in the Western Canadian Baseball League starts a runner on second base with zero outs. With one out, Tory Nelson got on base after being hit by a pitch and three pitches later, Dousett was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Woolwine knocked in a run on a fielders choice play, putting Medicine Hat ahead 5-4 with two out and runners on the corners. Nelson scored on a wild pitch and two pitches later, the third Mavericks run scored on an error from the Swift Current second baseman on a ball put in play by right fielder Brody Gardner. Henderson was back on the mound for the Mavericks in the 10th inning, allowing one run while recording enough outs to hold on for the Mavericks 7-5 win. The Mavericks (7-8) get a much needed day off Wednesday before hosting Swift Current on Thursday at Athletic Park for a 7:05 p.m. contest. 9
