The Medicine Hat Mavericks flexed their offensive muscles Tuesday night. The Mavericks notched 12 hits as they beat the Fort McMurray Giants 7-3 at Legacy Dodge Field. Medicine Hat entered the contest off a 9-4 loss in Sylvan Lake against the Gulls on Monday. Both the Giants and Mavericks were held off the scoreboard for the first five innings of Tuesday’s contest as both starters held their own on the mound. Medicine Hat starter Garrrett Nicholson picked up the win with six shutout innings while only allowing four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Kyle Calzadiaz took over on the mound and registered a strikeout in his three innings of work, allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Mavericks got on the board in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double from right fielder Brody Gardner. The Asheboro, N.C. product leads Medicine Hat in RBIs with 10 through the first eight games of the season. Medicine Hat added another run in the top of the seventh on a RBI double from catcher Dominic VanDoorne. After two quick outs in the top of the eighth inning, Medicine Hat notched three hits and plated four runs for a 7-0 lead. A leadoff walk from third baseman Nathan Tarver was followed up with a five pitch walk from left fielder Ryan Dousett. Eight pitches later designated hitter Brent Cota drew a walk and shortstop Tyler Vanneste cleared the loaded bases with a double to give him three RBI on two hits in the win. Van Doorne led the Mavericks offence with four hits and two RBI. The Giants avoided the shutout and made a late push in the bottom of the ninth inning with a RBI double from third baseman Kaleb Lemos getting them on the board before a two-run home run from catcher Jordan Bach brought the 750 Fort McMurray faithful back to life. After allowing the three runs, Calzadiaz shut the door on the Giants and secured the 7-3 win for Medicine Hat. The Mavericks (4-4) are back in action Wednesday with a rematch in Fort McMurray against the Giants before they head back to Sylvan Lake to face the Gulls on Thursday to wrap-up the four-game road trip. 8
