Heller, McElroy-O’Driscoll win City Singles titles

Calvin Heller and Dannan McElroy-O’Driscoll are City Singles Tennis Tournament champions.

Heller outlasted Niall Weich for the Men’s Open title in a nail-biting 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 final, while McElroy-O’Driscoll held off Dawn Olson, 6-2, 6-4, to take the Women’s Open crown this weekend at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club.

Both Open finals were a battle between the tournament’s top two seeds, with the top seed pulling out the victory in both cases.

Riley Danroth won the Men’s Consolation title after defeating Messele Fentabil, 6-1, 6-2 in the final, while Sandy McIntosh won the women’s bracket with a 6-1, 6-1 win over CoraLee Riehl.

Thomas Fentabil won the Intermediate Men’s bracket after besting David Schnare (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) in the final, while Mulu Gebre beat Gary Laurent (6-4, 6-0) for the consolation title.

Emilee Jackson took first in the Intermediate Women’s tournament, with Gabi Hale finishing second.

Tournament play returns to the Medicine Hat Tennis Club on Saturday with the Tim Hortons Medicine Hat Junior Open Singles Tournament.
