Mavericks beat Weyburn on Wednesday for second straight victory

By James Tubb on May 31, 2023.

After not winning their first three games, the Medicine Hat Mavericks have strung together a pari of wins.

The Mavericks won 6-4 in Weyburn for their second straight win against the Beavers. Medicine Hat entered the contest off the heels of a 13-7 victory on Tuesday in Weyburn.

Both team’s pitchers took over the first four innings as neither team could scratch across a run. Mavericks pitcher Dylan Esquival picked up the win on the mound with 10 strikeouts in six innings pitched while only allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Casey Henderson worked two clean innings with a strikeout and three walks before Lucas Tell took over in the ninth inning. Dylan Weaver took the ball with the bases loaded in the same inning and registered a strikeout while picking up the save and the 6-4 victory.

The Mavericks were the first team on the board, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning. First baseman Tyler Vanneste knocked in a run with a single before centre fielder Jackson Woolwine drove in two more runs with a bases loaded single.

Weyburn threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth as they had the bases loaded with one out but Esquival and the Mavericks defence worked their way through the jam.

Medicine Hat added another run in the top of the sixth, with right fielder Brody Gardner scoring on a sacrifice hit from second baseman Brady Bean. Weyburn plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Mavericks lead to 4-2.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Medicine Hat padded their lead with a two-run eighth inning. With runners on first and second, Bean knocked in a run with a double and scored a batter later on an error from Weyburn’s second baseman.

The Beavers made a late push in the ninth inning, loading the bases and scoring a run before the Mavericks registered an out. A foul ball fly out, a sacrifice hit from Weyburn and a dropped third strikeout groundout wrapped up the inning and Medicine Hat held on for the 6-4 victory.

The Mavericks head to Regina on Thursday to face the Red Sox for the first time since beating them 2-0 in their 2022 WCBL quarterfinals series. The club then returns to Medicine Hat on Friday to open a two-game home stand, facing the Swift Current 57’s on Friday before facing the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Saturday for the first time since dropping Game 3 of their semi-finals series in early August.
