Mavericks fall 15-9 Sunday to wrap opening weekend

A bloated second innings cost the Medicine Hat Mavericks their first Sunday matinee of the season.

The Swift Current 57’s scored seven runs in the second inning Sunday before ultimately taking an 15-9 win over the Mavericks at Athletic Park.

Medicine Hat entered the contest coming off two losses to the Lethbridge Bulls, falling 8-4 Friday on the road and 7-6 Saturday at AP.

Garrett Nicholson started for the Mavericks and worked a clean first inning before being replaced on the mound in the second after allowing five runs on three walks. Kyle Calzadiaz took over pitching duties for two innings, putting up two strikeouts with four runs (three earned) against.

Lucas Tell pitched 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and three runs against before Casey Henderson took over and worked 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and three runs against. Medicine Hat product Jack Suhai registered the final five outs for Medicine Hat, notching a strikeout.

The Mavericks were the first one the board in the game putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning off a sacrifice fly from third baseman Nathan Tarver and an RBI single from designated hitter Noah Adams.

After Swift Current put up their seven runs in the top of the second frame, Medicine Hat scored a run on a sacrifice fly out from left fielder Brody Gardner to make the game 7-3.

The Mavericks picked up a lone run in the fourth inning off a Tarver RBI single before adding two more runs in the sixth inning with a pair of RBI singles from Gardner and Adams to make the score 12-7 through seven innings.

Swift Current added three runs in the top of the eighth inning and the Mavericks added two in the bottom of the ninth off a single from second baseman Tyler Vanneste and a second sac fly from Gardner for the final score of 15-9.

The Mavericks (0-3) will hit the road in search of their first win in the 2023 WCBL season as they are in Weyburn for a pair of games to face the Beavers before heading to Regina to battle the Red Sox. The first of their two-game set in Weyburn is Tuesday night, first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
