The Medicine Hat Mavericks made it interesting late in their season opener Friday. The Mavericks scored three runs with two outs in the ninth inning but could not overcome the deficit as they fell 8-4 in Lethbridge against the Bulls. It was a back and forth affair for three innings as both Medicine Hat and Lethbridge traded hits and outs. Mavericks starter Adam Golby worked 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and two runs against (one earned) before Zac Robinson took over on the mound. Robinson had 1.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts and two earned runs against, ultimately taking the loss in the game. Medicine Hat pitcher Tim Carlson was on the mound for the sixth and seventh innings with three runs against. Evan Bilter finished the game with a strikeout and a run against in an inning of work. The Mavericks first offence on the season came in the top of the eighth inning off an RBI double from outfielder Brody Gardner who knocked in outfielder Jackson Woolwine from first base. Medicine Hat carried their offensive momentum into the ninth inning and started picking up steam after registering two straight outs. Second baseman Brady Bean drew a walk and quickly stole both second and third base before first baseman Tory Nelson drew himself a walk. Catcher Dominic VanDoorne scored Bean with an RBI single before Woolwine knocked in both Nelson and VanDoorne with a two-RBI double. Lethbridge pitcher Cole Alguire eventually shut the door on the game and held on for the Bulls 8-4 win. Alguire worked two innings on the mound with three strikeouts and four runs against. Lethbridge starter Max Benton picked up the win with three strikeouts across five innings pitched. The Bulls outhit Medicine Hat 10-8, both teams committed two errors in the early season contest. The Mavericks’ (0-1) next action is Saturday night when they host the Bulls at Athletic Park for their home opener, that contest gets underway at 7:05 p.m. 9
