JV Colts continue winning ways to their ball season

The Monsignor McCoy JV Colts baseball team has stayed hot to start their 2023 spring baseball season.

The JV Colts competed in the Riley Martin Memorial Tournament in Brooks over the weekend, finishing tied for second place.

In the first game of their tournament on Friday the JV Colts beat the Erle River Comets 12-1. Dane Brooks started on the mound and earned the win and the offence was led with a balanced approach. Ethan Grad scored a run and reached base in all four of his at bats with a single and three walks and Merrick Kurpjuweit, Liam Cunningham and Owen Fisher each had a hit and a run scored.

The McCoy JV squad ran into some tough pitching in their second game of the day, losing 9-2 against the Cardston Cougars. Kurpjuweit had the only two hits of the game for the JV Colts, Ryan Ziebart, Tyler Werner and Liam Cunningham split the duties on the mound.

The JV Colts completed round robin play in the tournament Saturday morning with an 16-12 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds. Liam Cunningham got the start on the mound and earned the win. He helped his own cause with two hits, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Dane Brooks had two doubles and a run scored while Tyler Werner was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Asha Frey chipped in with a single and four runs scored for McCoy.

The JV Colts wrapped up a busy weekend with a Monday night, 13-3 five inning road win against the South Central Scorpions.

Nixon Kunkel pitched the first three innings allowing two earned runs while striking out two batters to earn the win. Jayden Mook pitched two shutout innings in relief.

Ethan Grad had a double and three runs scored to lead the JV Colts offense while Liam Cunningham and Dane Brooks each had a hit and two runs scored. Easton Kurpjuweit chipped with a single, a run scored and an RBI.

The McCoy JV squad’s record is 7-2, their next action is a makeup game vs. Notre Dame Wilcox on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. at Athletic Park.

Sr. Colts win big Monday

The McCoy Varsity Colts defeated the Magrath Zeniths 14-1 on the road in six innings Monday night.

Kayne Olinski pitched the first four innings allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out three batters to earn the win. Caleb Garrecht pitched two shutout innings in relief allowing just one baserunner and recording four strikeouts.

McCoy had a well balanced offence as Fischer Haysom led the way with three hits including a triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Jackson Bowal reached base in all five of his at bats with two hits including a double and three walks while scoring two runs. JJ Harnett also had two hits and two RBI while Matt Fritzler registered a double and four RBI.

The Sr. Colts (3-1) are on the road for their next couple of games, travelling to Lethbridge May 15 vs LCI and May 16 vs Chinook.
