Ringette roundup: Mud Dawgs, Chicken Hawks capture ringette provincials

Medicine Hat ringette teams rounded up their season in a big way this weekend.

Both the U14 Mud Dawgs and U19 Chicken Hawks brought home provincial gold to finish their 2022-23 seasons.

The Mud Dawgs started off their tournament with a Friday morning 6-4 victory over Sherwood Park. Margot Kerr’s three goals led the way offensively with Leighton Wright, Kenzie Provost and Jayna Allchurch each adding a goal.

Medicine Hat’s momentum continued with a nail-biter win that evening against Calgary Bowview Storm. Provost had two goals with Maddie Helgeson, Kerr, Sloane Berstad, Sophie Stock and Wright each adding a goal.

The Mud Dawgs collected two more wins on Saturday against Drayton Valley and Red Deer securing their place in the semi-final Sunday.

Against Drayton Valley, Kerr had her second hat trick of the tournament with Wright and Allchurch each adding two goals of their own.

In their win against Red Deer, Berstad had three goals with Wright finding the back of the net twice. Eden Schmunk, Stock, Sutton Provost, Kerr and Kenzie Provost all had a goal.

Medicine Hat earned a spot in the gold-medal game with an 8-3 win over Calgary Northwest Rampage. Kenzie Provost and Wright led with two goals each and Stock, Josie Hillson, Tia Van Maarion and Schmunk each scored a goal.

The Mud Dawgs won gold by beating Fort McMurray, who was last year’s provincial champion. Medicine Hat’s offence came from Wright and Allchurch scoring twice each and Kenzie Provost, Maddie Helgeson and Berstad all notching one of their own.

U19

The U19 Chicken Hawks won their provincial championship in Westlock, winning five times to clinch the title. They beat the Calgary South Berserk 6-4 to punch a finals ticket against the Calgary Aces, who they outscored 4-3 to bring home the hardware.

They led the tournament in scoring with 41 goals for, a goal differential of 28, 48 penalty minutes and were tied for first for only allowing 13 goals.

The Chicken Hawks also had four players in the top-five of tournament scoring. Demi Karamanos was first with eight goals and 15 points. Kylie Kallenberger was second with eight goals and 11 points, Hanna Thompson third with 7 goals and 11 points and Kayla Robinson fifth with seven goals and 10 assists.

The Chicken Hawks finish their season with a division record of 41-0-2.

U12

The Medicine Hat U12 Phoenix were in Calgary for regionals this weekend, coming away with a silver medal. Jacqueline LeBlanc and Sophia Smith both stood tall between the pipes throughout the weekend.

The Phoenix played the Lethbridge Rattlers in their first game, winning 8-4. Breanna Lanuk had six goals in the opening win with Brea Butterfield and Kassidy Etienne each adding a goal.

They played the Bow View Night Howlers in their second game, scoring another eight goals coming away with the 8-2 win. Lanuk once again led, this game with three goals. Lacey Gibney and Butterfield both had two goals and Etienne had a solo marker.

The Phoenix started Saturday off with an 11-8 win over the Bow View Renegades. Lanuk had seven goals on her own and both Etienne and Gibney scored twice.

Medicine Hat ended the day with a 6-2 win over the Strathmore Ice. Butterfield and Lanuk continued their offence with two goals each in the win with Jacqueline LeBlanc and Gibney adding a goal of their own.

The Phoenix won 9-7 Sunday morning against the Northwest Cobras, punching their ticket to the gold-medal game. Lanuk had five goals in that win with Gibney adding three of her own and Etienne had one as well.

In the finals the Phoenix lost to the Foothills Force 8-4. The Phoenix’s offence was spread between four players with Onyka Funk, Butterfield, Lanuk and Gibney each contributing a goal.
