Rattlers roundup: Rattlers indoor track team finishes third at Red Deer meet

By Medicine Hat News on February 22, 2023.

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers indoor track team put in its best performance since joining the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association circuit on Saturday in the second leg of the Running Room Grand Prix in Red Deer, taking third overall in team standings.

The Rattlers racked up 69 points to take the final podium spot behind host and winner Red Deer Polytechnic, with 120.5 points, and runner-up SAIT, which had 85 points.

Thirty-eight of those 69 points came from the college’s female athletes. Becky Ross won the 3,000-metre and finished second in the 1,500. Maddy Scrimger took third on her own in the 3,000-metre and teamed up with Raya Grover, Pyper Gill and Chelldyn Molnar for third in the 4×400.

On the men’s side, Carson Schiller, Jaiden Romaniuk, Justin Jager and Branon Sumner combined for silver in the 3×200. Gage Smith replaced Romaniuk in the 4×400 and helped MHC to another second-place finish. Sumner also logged a fourth-place finish in the 600-metre.

The Rattlers return to action March 18-19 for the ACAC Indoor Track Championships in Edmonton.

Women’s volleyball

The Rattlers women’s volleyball team were dealt a season-ending loss by the Lethbridge Kodiaks in Friday’s ACAC championship play-in game, falling 25-12, 25-18, 25-16.

Emily Barringer and Anica Haberstock both had five kills for MHC in the loss, while Olivia Jacobson and Ella Nichols both had five digs.

The Rattlers ended the regular season with a 5-14 record to clinch the final play-in spot.

Men’s basketball

The Rattlers men’s basketball team closed out the ACAC regular season at 9-12 following a 78-66 loss to University of Alberta Augustana on Friday.

Cooper Ward led MHC with 32 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Nic Harder led UAA with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Despite the setback, MHC’s seventh in a row, the Rattlers have qualified for an ACAC championship play-in game, which will be held Friday at 7 p.m. against 13-8 Red Deer.

Women’s basketball

The Rattlers women’s basketball team fell short of clinching a victory this season with Friday’s 79-35 loss to University of Alberta Augustana, ending their campaign at 0-21.
