Gavin McKenna’s spotlight continues to grow, now putting on a show at the national level.

The Medicine Hat Tigers’ top prospect has dominated his first two games representing Team Yukon at the Canada Winter Games held in P.E.I. He had six goals and three assists in Yukon’s 11-6 win over Nunavut on Monday morning before putting up two goals and six assists in their 9-2 afternoon win over Northwest Territories.

He leads the U16 tournament in scoring with 17 points in two games with the second place scorer, Jase Johnstone (four goals, 10 points) also representing the Yukon. The 15-year-old is so far on pace to break the Winter Games’ points record of 27 held by Quebec’s Francois Methot in 1995 and New Brunswick’s Kelsey Tessier in 2007 – the year McKenna was born – though tougher opponents are coming.

McKenna and the Yukon have two more games in the preliminary round as they face P.E.I. (1-1) this morning at 6 a.m. before taking on Newfoundland and Labrador, who have won all three of their games, at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Team Alberta leading Pool B

Team Alberta has remained perfect through their first two contests at the Winter Games.

They beat Nova Scotia 4-1 on Sunday with Tigers prospect Hayden Harsanyi and Medicine Hat product/South Alberta Hockey Academy forward Ryan Miller each picking up an assist.

On Monday Team Alberta went the distance with Team Ontario, edging out the Eastern team 3-2 in overtime.

Team Alberta wraps up their pool play today at 9:30 a.m. against British Columbia who is 1-1.
