Ringette Roundup: U12 Phoenix bring home Silver from Regina

The Medicine Hat U12 Phoenix ringette team won silver this weekend at the Queen City Classic in Regina.

The U12 team started off strong with a 10-4 win against Buffalo Plains Rage. Sophia Smith stood tall in net and the offence was led by Lacey Gibney’s four goals. Breanna Lanuk added three goals of her own, Kassidy Etienne had two and Brea Butterfield added a goal. Olivia Ulbricht, Onyka Funk, Myah Weber and Jordyn LeBlanc all had assists in the win.

In the Phoenix’s second game, they beat the Regina Warriorz 9-4. Lanuk led the way with three goals and an assist, Etienne had two goals and an assist, Butterfield had two goals and Ulbricht added a goal of her own. Gibney and LeBlanc had helpers and in goal was Jacqueline LeBlanc.

The Phoenix lost their third game 6-3 to the Regina Riot, despite many saves by goaltender Sophia Smith. Gibney scored all three goals, with assists by Etienne and Lanuk.

In their fourth game, the Phoenix defeated the Buffalo Plains Thunder 7-6. LeBlanc once again stood tall in net and great team work led to their win. The trio of Ulbricht, Etienne and Gibney had two goals each. Myah Weber also scored. Lanuk, Etienne, Butterfield and LeBlanc added helpers.

The Medicine Hat Phoenix met the Regina Riot again in the gold medal game but fell 4-2. Lanuk and Gibney had the offence with Butterfield and Etienne notching the helpers.

The Phoenix travel to High River for their next league games on Saturday.

U10

The U10 Step 1 Gators were back in action over the weekend with two league games at home. Dylin Kerluke put up two goals in the first game, while Charlie Lowe and Aphten Myram kept the score low while between the pipes.

The visiting Indus Lightning battled the Gators in the second game. Addy McKinley scored while Kerluke and Everley Cross shut down several Indus shots in the contest. Zayda Dawson and Kylee Drever also each put up a goal.

Cross, Lowe and Myram each had hat tricks in both games.

The U10 Step 3 Gators hosted the Indus Lightening on Sunday at the Moose Arena.

In the first game Evangeline Robins was in net and stopped 34 shots in a 4-1 loss, with the Gators’ lone goal coming from Annalise Robins.

In the second game, Grace Stirling stood tall in net and Gators goals were scored by Jorja Sadler and Arika McDowall.

U14

The Medicine Hat U14 Mud Dawgs won bronze at the Queen City Classic in Regina this weekend.

The Mud Dawgs won their first game 9-5 over the Regina Fusion and took their second game against the Saskatoon Renegades 7-0. The Medicine Hat team fell short losing 6-5 to the Buffalo Plains Warriors in their third contest.

The Mud Dawgs won against the Regina Shock 10-3 before losing 8-5 to the Buffalo Plains Renegades.

The U14 club played against the Regina Infinity in the bronze medal game and took the medal with a 7-1 win.

U16

The Medicine Hat U16 Matrix had a doubleheader in Calgary Saturday to round out their regular season play in first place of the Ringette Calgary League with a record of 11-1-2.

In the first game Saturday, the Matrix shutout the Northwest Calgary Ambush 11-0. Kyree Stern and the defence combined efforts for the shutout.

Ava Allchurch, Kasey Martin and Grace Ammann each had three goals in the win. Mackenzie Tindall had the Matrix’ other two goals. Ryleigh Jackiw racked up six assists, Ammann had four, Martin added three while Tindall had two helpers and Bella Heinrichs and Karly Stennick each had an assist.

In the second game, the Matrix came out on top 9-1 against the second placed NW Calgary Elite. Tindall led the way with a hat trick while Martin added two and Ammann and Jackiw each had a goal. Ammann also had three assists, Allchurch had two helpers and Ella Seale, Martin, Alexis Unreiner and Jackiw each had an assist.

The Matrix are off this weekend and await to see who they face in playdowns the weekend to follow. The Matrix and MHRA will host the U16B Ringette Alberta Provincials March 17-19 at the Kinplex and Hockey Hounds Arena.
