Cubs end weekend on high note with win Sunday

The Medicine Hat Cubs endured a losing weekend for the first time since the opening month of the season.

The Cubs lost 9-7 Friday night at home against the Coaldale Copperheads before falling 6-5 Saturday in Okotoks against the Bisons. They picked up two points on Sunday with an 9-2 win on the road in High River against the Flyers.

Friday night, Connor Douglas led the way for the Cubs with a goal and two assists and both Cooper Hilworth and Callen Prosofsky each had a goal and an assist. Connor Miller, Kyle Woolridge, Garret Harty and Jacob Milne also scored in the loss to Coaldale, Kellen Bojic made 28 saves.

After trailing the Bisons 3-0 through 21 minutes on Saturday, the Cubs came back before the two teams traded chances with Okotoks coming out on top. Colby Friedrich and Connor Douglas each had two goals with Milne rounding out the scoring. Mark Peddle made 43 saves in the loss.

Sunday’s win in High River was led by Douglas who had two goals and two assists, Hilworth carried the offence with three goals. Captain Levi Schlosser, Prosofsky and Miller each had a goal and an assist, Jackson Bowal had a goal of his own and Keynan Cairns had three helpers in the win. Bojic turned aside 22 shots for the victory.

Behind the Cubs bench, head coach and general manager Randy Wong notched his 50th career HJHL regular season win on Sunday. He took over the reins at the beginning of the 2020-21 COVID cancelled season and has had a 50-16-6 at the helm of the orange and black.

The Cubs (24-7-3) remain in second place of the Southern division with two games on the docket this weekend. They travel to Coaldale on Saturday for an 8 p.m. contest before hosting the High River Flyers on Sunday for a 3 p.m. game, their second last home game of the regular season.
