Minor Hockey Roundup: Hounds rally to road win in Lethbridge

The Medicine Hat Hounds U18AA hockey team rallied to a 5-2 victory over the rival Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday at Logan Boulet Arena.

Jacob Hazzard opened the scoring in the first period, then Wyatt Bower extended the lead to two in the second.

Hazzard struck again early in the third, then Connor Palmer made it 4-0 before Lethbridge answered back with goals from Ashton Angle and Brett Hudey.

Kaden Pahl rounded out the scoring with a late power play goal, while Tyler Wakelam stopped 27 shots in goal for the win.

The victory pushes the Hounds to fourth in the South Central Alberta Hockey League’s South Division standings with a 10-12-2 record. The return to the ice Saturday in Taber to face the Golden Suns.

U18AA girls

The Southern Express U18AA girls hockey team is still searching for its first victory following a 7-0 loss to Calgary Fire White on Sunday in Lethbridge.

Raine Nelson turned away 50 shots for the Express in the loss, moving the team to 0-18-0-0 on the Alberta Female Hockey League season.

The Express will be back on the ice in Lethbridge on Saturday to host the Sherwood Park Fury.

U17AAA boys

South East Athletic Club’s U17AAA Tigers split their weekend on the ice with a 4-3 road win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday and a 5-2 setback at the hands of the Calgary Flames at home on Sunday.

Kayden Yeaman, Kellin Hodgson and Randen Collier scored three goals in just over four minutes to erase a 1-0 Hurricanes lead on Saturday in Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes struck back with two quick ones of their own midway through the third, from Breaden Jack and Connor Chapman, but Medicine Hat’s Will Bell netted a shorthanded game-winner with just under four minutes left in regulation.

Kolter Ganes stopped 21 shots in the win.

Yeaman and Hodgson repeated the feat Sunday, scoring three minutes apart in the second to give Medicine Hat a 2-1 lead, but this time Calgary dug in and responded with four unanswered goals to put the Tigers in the loss column.

Kayne Wright stopped 31 shots in the loss.

The Tigers – 8-9-2-3 on the Alberta Elite Hockey League season – will be on the road Friday to face the AC Avalanche before taking on the Northstars on Saturday in Calgary.

U16AA boys

The Medicine Hat Hounds U16AA club also ended up with a split weekend on the road following a 9-2 win over Lethbridge on Friday and a 6-3 loss to the Airdrie-Bow Valley Havoc on Sunday.

Medicine Hat’s offence came alive Friday, with Davin Torgerson and Hudson Jarvis staking a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Torgerson and Jarvis both scored again in the second, while Kian Green joined the party halfway through the period.

Togerson completed the hat trick early in the third, the Grady Ford extended the lead to seven before Lethbridge’s Tyler Tisdale scored shorthanded to put the Hurricanes on the board.

Green then tacked on two late tallies to complete his own hat trick before Lethbridge’s Koh Termamura added a consolation marker in the final minute.

Torgerson finished the game with five points, while Owen Gustafson had a three-assist outing.

Parker McLaughlin stopped 19 shots in the win.

The Hounds found themselves on the other side of the coin Sunday when the Havoc stormed ahead to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Medicine Hat dug in and rallied back with three straight from Logan Weiss, Nolen Sutherland and Grady Ford, but the Havoc pushed the game out of reach with a pair of late goals.

Adam Ranger stopped 23 shots in goal for Medicine Hat.

The Hounds (10-7-5) will host the Okotoks Oilers on Friday night at Co-op Place and the Wheatland Raiders on Sunday afternoon at the Kinplex.

U15AAA boys

SEAC’s U15AAA Tigers had their losing streak extended to 13 games with a 7-5 loss to the Okotoks Oilers Saturday and a 6-0 loss to the Airdrie Xtreme Sunday.

Medicine Hat traded goals with Okotoks through the first two frames to enter the third period with a 4-3 lead, but the Oilers rallied for four straight to push the game out of reach in the third.

Kingston Chisholm scored in the first, then added another late in the third period. Kade Dickie, Elijah Fleck and Ty Wasyluk all scored in the second.

Hudson Corbett stopped 40 shots in the loss.

Grady Brost started Sunday’s contest and stopped 17 of 21 shots in the first 40 minutes before Corbett entered and turned away 11 of 13 in the third.

The Tigers (1-23-1) will play road three games in the upcoming weekend, Friday against the Leduc Oil Kings, Saturday against the Sherwood Park Flyers and Sunday against the Grande Prairie Storm.

U15AA girls

The Southern Express U15AA girls hockey team came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the Rock Mountain Raiders on the road Sunday.

Beth Burton, Myla Motz and Brooke Dyck all scored for the Express in a back-and-forth affair, but the Raiders ultimately escaped with the victory on Kamryn Reiber’s late game-winner.

Sutter Reeves stopped 42 shots for the Express in the loss.

The Express (6-15-0-1) will host Calgary Fire Red on Sunday at Nicolas Sheran Arena.

U15AA boys

SEAC’s U15AA Tigers were also dealt a pair of setbacks over the weekend in a 4-0 loss to Lethbridge Friday and a 7-2 loss to the Wheatland Warriors Sunday.

Tigers goaltender Mac Harvey-Zenk stopped 33 shots in Friday’s shutout loss, then Kayden Van Ham stepped into the crease with a 35-save effort Sunday.

Jackson Brassard and Rhyder Arnold scored Medicine Hat’s goals on Sunday, both on the power play.

The Tigers (4-18-4) will be on the road Saturday to face the Foothills Bisons before returning home to host the Red Deer Steel Kings Sunday.
