The Medicine Hat College Rattlers indoor track team racked up 10 top-5 finishes with five new school records at the ACAC 1 Indoor Track Meet on Saturday in Edmonton. Rookie Justin Jager led the Rattlers with a silver in the men’s 300-metre – finishing in 37.95, just 23 one-hundredths of a second behind winner Kwasi Frampong, from SAIT, and two second faster than the MHC record. Jager also earned bronze as lead-off in the 4×200 relay, another school record, and finished fourth as lead in the 4×400. Brandon Sumner, captain of the men’s team, ran anchor on both relay events, and finished just off the podium in the men’s 1,000-metre – finishing fifth in 2:45, two seconds faster than his own school record – and took fourth in the 600-metre. Maddy Scrimger led the women’s team with a school record in the women’s 1,000-metre, shattering the previous mark by seven seconds with a time of 3:26, and finished third in the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Fellow Rattler Pyper Gill took third in the women’s 3,000-metre, while Cheldynn Molnar finished fourth in the women’s 300-metre. All-Canadian cross country runner Becky Ross was unable to travel to the meet due to illness. The Rattlers will be back in action in Medicine Hat on Feb. 18 for the Panthers indoor meet. Men’s basketball The Rattlers men’s basketball team rebounded from Friday’s narrow 87-86 loss to the Briercrest Clippers with an 87-76 victory in Saturday’s rematch on the road, snapping a three-game slide. Cooper Ward led the Rattlers with a 40-point, 13-rebound effort in Saturday’s win, while Fred Kabore added 11 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Riley Seaborn led the Clippers with 25 points and 12 rebounds in the rematch. Ward also led the Rattlers Friday with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Ethan Robinson had 19 points with 13 boards. Matthew Bryant led Briercrest with 15 points, while Danny Mullens added 11 with 10 rebounds. The Rattlers sit at 9-5 following the weekend, while Briercrest moved to 2-12. Women’s basketball The Rattlers women’s basketball team is still searching for its first win of the season following back-to-back losses at Briercrest this weekend. The Rattlers fell 85-40 on Friday, but put up a better fight Saturday in a narrow 65-63 loss. Brynn Bremner and Kristie Johnson both had 11 points for Medicine Hat in Saturday’s loss, while Bremner added six rebounds. Amber Fichtner led the Clippers with 24 points and 16 rebounds Saturday. Fichtner also led Briercrest in Friday’s win with 17 points and eight rebounds. Nylah Seaborn led Medicine Hat with nine points from the bench, while Jordyn Knight added six boards. Briercrest climbed to 7-7 with the wins. The Rattlers (0-14) basketball teams are on the road Friday in St. Mary’s before returning to the Snake Pit on Saturday to close out the home-and-home set. Women’s volleyball The Rattlers women’s volleyball team slipped to 5-10 on the ACAC season with back-to-back losses to the Clippers on Friday (25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 26-24) and Saturday (25-12, 25-19, 25-15). Ella Nichols had 13 kills for the Rattlers on Friday and added 12 more on Saturday, while Kennedy Bloomfield led Saturday’s defence with 10 digs and Hailey Adams had 10 of her own on Friday. Faith Buhler led Briercrest (6-7) with 13 kills Friday, while Kelsey Simes posted 10 on Saturday. Men’s volleyball The Rattlers men’s volleyball team was also dealt a pair of losses by Briercrest over the weekend, falling in three sets Friday (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) and four on Saturday (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19). Nathan Chernik led the Rattlers with 14 kills and five digs on Friday, then followed it up with 19 kills and four digs Saturday. Jordan McKee added 14 kills and six digs in Saturday’s loss. Karym Coleman powered Briercrest to victory both nights, logging 14 kills Friday and 20 on Saturday with nine digs. Medicine Hat fell to 2-13 with the losses, while Briercrest jumped to 8-5. MHC volleyball squads will be back in action Feb. 3 to take on the Kodiaks in Lethbridge. 34
