Cubs claw to second in HJHL South

By Medicine Hat News on January 25, 2023.

The Medicine Hat Cubs have worked their way into second in the HJHL’s Southern Division, right where they want to be.

A 4-1 win Saturday over the High River Flyers and 2-1 victory over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings on Sunday put the Cubs in second and ahead of the Cochrane Generals by four points. The Okotoks Bisons remain first in the division with 60 points.

Medicine Hat’s magic number to secure second place and a first-round bye in the playoffs is down to six. Any three Cubs wins or three Cochrane losses and Medicine Hat can use the first round of the playoffs to rest, recover and prepare for round two.

In Saturday’s win at the Kinplex, captain Levi Schlosser led the way with a goal and an assist while Colby Friedrich, Kyle Wooldrige and Vaughn Strutt each added a goal. Mark Peddle was between the pipes, making 21 saves in the win. Medicine Hat outshot High River 60-22.

On the road Sunday in Strathmore, Keynan Cairns and Cooper Hillworth scored in the first period as the Cubs only allowed a goal in the second before holding on for the 2-1 victory. Kellen Bojic picked up the win in goal, turning aside 21 of Strathmore’s shots.

The Cubs (23-5-3) have yet another three-game weekend as they play host to Highway 3 rival Coaldale Copperheads on Friday before they hit the road once again for games in Okotoks Saturday and High River Sunday.
