The Medicine Hat Tigers picked up a much needed two points Wednesday night in Swift Current. The Tigers held on to beat the Broncos 5-4 in the sixth round of the shootout off a goal from Brayden Boehm. Tomas Mrsic and Andrew Basha also scored in the game ender, Beckett Langkow stopped four of six shooters after making 23 saves in 65 minutes of action. Medicine Hat entered the contest on a high after beating the Prince George Cougars 5-2 Tuesday night at Co-op Place. The Tigers got on the board first with a shorthanded goal from Shane Smith 4:07 into the contest. Hunter St. Martin had the assist on Smith’s second shorthanded goal of the year and 14th marker on the campaign. A little over eight minutes later the Broncos evened it up with a power play goal from Josh Filmon. Connor Hvidston and Mathew Ward had the helpers. Swift Current took their first lead 8:47 into the second frame with Josh Fluker’s first Western Hockey League goal. Just short of three minutes later, the Tigers evened it up with a power play goal from Boehm. Smith and Basha had the assists on Boehm’s 17th goal of the year as Medicine Hat went 1-for-6 with the man advantage Wednesday. The Tigers lead grew to 4-2 in a flurry to end the second period with two straight goals from defenceman Bogdans Hodass. He scored on the rush at the 13:30 mark with Reid Andresen picking up the assist and exactly five minutes later, picked up a loose puck as a power play expired and fired home a shot for his seventh goal of the year. Cayden Lindstrom had the assist as the Tigers were outshooting the Broncos 21-20 and up 4-2 through 40 minutes. Swift Current was far from rolling over as Filmon scored his second of the night and 28th of the year 3:47 into the period to bring them within one. Then with 7:24 left in the game, Hvidston scored seconds into a power play to tie the game up at 4-4. After both teams traded chances in overtime, Medicine Hat outshooting Swift Current 6-1 with a power play, the game headed for the shootout where Boehm called game. The Tigers (17-21-5-1) are back in action Saturday when they host the Calgary Hitmen at Co-op Place for a 7 p.m. contest. They also have a 4 p.m. rematch with the Broncos, also at Co-op Place. 11
