The South Alberta Hockey Academy women’s team welcomed some of the best Canadian Sport School Hockey League teams to Medicine Hat over the weekend.
There were 12 teams taking part in the four-day, 24-game showcase, with teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. in action at the Big Marble Go Centre and Hockey Hounds Arena.
SAHA opened the showcase with a 9-0 loss against Rink Kelowna on Thursday before beating the Delta U18 team 2-1 on Friday. Kendal Davidson and Norah Andronyk each scored in the win and Maddy Ferguson made 32 saves.
On Saturday SAHA had a close battle with Edge, losing 2-1. Kiyra Kletzel had their lone goal and Devyn Amundson had 26 saves in the loss. They wrapped up the weekend with a 6-1 loss in a rematch with Rink Kelowna. Davidson scored SAHA’s lone goal and Amundson made 34 saves.
The SAHA women’s team’s (11-6-0-1) next scheduled CSSHL action is Feb. 3 at home against Edge.
SAHA men on the road
The SAHA men’s U18 team had a two-game road set over the weekend due to the locally-held showcase.
They opened their weekend showcase at Notre Dame Academy in Wilcox, Sask. with a 5-4 loss against Edge.
Gavin McKenna had two goals and an assist, Ryan Miller added a goal and an assist and Noah Dziver rounded out the scoring with a goal. Zach Zahara made 26 saves in the loss.
SAHA got back into winning ways on Saturday, beating Prairie Hockey Academy 5-1 on Saturday,
Kadon McCann potted two goals and both Kade Duell and McKenna had a goal and three assists. Miller added a goal and two assists of his own and Zahara turned aside 34 shots for the win.
SAHA was leading Northern Alberta Xtreme 1-0 after 20 minutes with a goal from Miller before the game was suspended due to a power outage. Zahara had nine saves and the game will be made up at a later date.
The SAHA men’s team (16-6-0-2) have a two-game road slate this weekend, facing RHA Winnipeg on Saturday and Pilot Mound Hockey Academy on Sunday.
