The Medicine Hat Cubs had an even weekend at the Kinplex.

The Cubs beat the Coaldale Copperheads 10-2 on Friday before coming back and losing 5-4 in the shootout Sunday against the Airdrie Thunder.

Colby Friedrich led the way on the scoresheet Friday, with two goals and three assists. Vaughan Strutt had two goals, Caleb Garrecht potted a goal and two assists and Darnell Glasgo, Kyle Woolridge and Cooper Hilworth each had a goal and an assist. Connor Miller and Connor Douglas each chipped in with a goal in the bloated win. Between the pipes Mark Peddle made 26 saves for the victory.

Against Airdrie, the Cubs trailed 4-1 to start the third period before they rattled off three unanswered to send the game to extra time. Garrett scored twice in the third period with Miller picking up the tying goal. Friedrich scored in the first period and both Peddle and Kaiden Morin split duties in net, making a combined 16 saves.

In Sunday’s game the Cubs and Thunder stood for a moment of silence for 21-year-old Ryan Couling, two passed on Nov. 22. His brother Zach plays for the Thunder. The Cubs also made a $400 donation to the Couling family, they took a $1 from every entry in the Coaldale game and matched it.

The Cubs sit second in the Southern division with a record of 15-6. They’ll hit the road Saturday to face off against the first place Okotoks Bisons before hosting the High River Flyers Sunday afternoon at the Kinplex. That game gets underway at 5:45 p.m.
