NEWS PHOTO JAMES TUBB Cartewr Allan, Ty Wasyluk and Carson Ward celebrate Wasyluk's opening goal for the Medicine Hat U15AAA SEAC Tigers in their 4-3 win THursday night against the West Central Wheat Kings to open their 49th Hockey Hounds tournament with a victory.

The U15AAA SEAC Tigers opened their Hockey Hounds tournament on a high note.

The Tigers beat the West Central Wheat Kings 4-3 Thursday night in their first game of the 49th annual bantam tournament. Head coach Mike Mueller says his team did a lot of things well and credited his special teams in the victory.

“We had offensive zone pressure, were good on the forecheck and recovered pucks,” Mueller said. “We moved  the puck around the offensive zone and got it to the net and the power play came through for us and our PK held up. We gave up one late there but just real happy with the first one and we move on to the second.”

Ty Wasyluk opened the scoring for SEAC, getting them on the board 20 seconds into the game. Carson Ward and Kingston Chisholm had the assists. They added to their lead a little over 10 minutes later when Illya Khazov found the back of the net, Kade Dickie and Carter Allan has the helpers on his goal. The Tigers led the period in shots 14-4.

The Wheat Kings got themselves on the board 2:19 into the second frame with a goal from Kaden Sperle. Medicine Hat regained their two goal lead with only 52 seconds left in the period. Chisholm scored a power play goal in the dying seconds of the frame as SEAC carried the momentum into the dressing room. Wasyluk and Theron Bensler had the assists on his goal.

Wasyluk scored what looked to be the insurance marker for SEAC on a power play with 7:28 left in the game. Bensler and Ward had the assists on the eventual game winner as West Central’s Tyce Perkins scored on the man advantage with 2:23 left to bring them within one of the Tigers.

SEAC held on for the 4-3 win, outshooting the Wheat Kings 43-18.

Mueller says they played their structure well which helped them maintain their lead. Their next game is Friday morning when they face off against OHA Edmonton Varsity at 11 a.m. at the Kinplex. Mueller was happy with the win but saw some things the Tigers can work on for that game.

“We need to have pressure in all three zones with and without the puck and we have to tidy up our face offs a little bit,” Mueller said. “We’ve got to do a little bit of work tomorrow morning on our PK in the defensive end.”
