Ringette Roundup: U12 Phoenix sweep weekend at home

The Medicine Hat Phoenix U12 ringette team opened the season with a pair of wins Sunday against the Strathmore Ice Bandits.

The Phoenix took the first game with a score of 14-4. The contest started off with some saves from goaltender Sophia Smith and was 11-3 after the first period with three goals each from Breanna Lanuk, Jacqueline LeBlanc and Lacey Gibney. Ally Martin and Brea Butterfield also added a goal each in the frame.

In the second period the Ice Bandits were held to four goals with the Phoenix adding three more, scored by Brea Butterfield, Martin and Lanuk.

Medicine Hat took the second game with a score of 12-6. The Bandits scored first but it was the Phoenix who came back with two goals from Martin. Jordyn LeBlanc, Lacey Gibney, Lanuk and Butterfield also added a goal each in the first period. In the second frame, the Phoenix added two more goals from Butterfield and a single goal each from Olivia Ulbricht, Myah Weber, LeBlanc and Gibney. The Ice were held to six goals by Hat goaltender Jacqueline LeBlanc.

The Medicine Hat Phoenix (2-0) head to Calgary on Nov. 20 for their next league games.

U14

The U14 Mud Dawgs had two games in Calgary on Saturday and dropped both.

The first contest was against the Northwest Knights and the Mud Dawgs fell 4-3. The Mud Dawgs had the lead most of the game and Sadie Berstad was solid in the net. Sloane Berstad scored twice, Leighton Wright scored a goal and Margot Kerr had two assists for the Medicine Hat offence.

The Mud Dawgs came across the undefeated Bow View Invasion in their second game and lost 11-3.

The Mud Dawgs had first period goals from Berstad (2) and Wright with Kerr, Addison Mastel, Tia Van Marrion and Eden Schmunk notching assists. Bow View scored four goals in the first period and seven more in the second. While Emma Pinnell was between the posts and the defence was strong but the Mud Dawgs ran out of steam.

The U14 Mud Dawgs (2-2) are in action against on Nov. 19.

U19

The Medicine Hat U19 Chicken Hawks played the Airdrie Sting on the weekend, winning the first game 11-1 and their second game 9-5. The Chicken Hawks played with a very solid defence, strong goaltending and an aggressive offence which helped lead to both wins.

The Chicken Hawks (7-2) will head to Regina this weekend for a tournament.
