The 2022 Rangeland Football Conference season was not one filled with wins for the McCoy Colts, but featured a season’s worth of growing moments.

From their first touchdowns, multiple sustained drives and positive attitude, the Colts embraced a self-declared building season and have started to lay the foundation under head coach Jole Krassman for success down the road.

He says this season has fueled the team’s passion for next season and what the Colts program can become.

“Trophies are nice, wins are nice, I’m still yet to experience a win in my high school head coaching career but that will come in time,” Krassman said. “Figuring out this program, getting kids going and knowing what we need to build on, the successes and failures, is definitely what we’re striving for.”

“We’re going to stay resilient, this season hasn’t deterred me at all and it definitely hasn’t deterred my kids. If anything it’s given them a motivation to see what we need to accomplish and what we need to work on in the offseason and we’re going to be putting in an offseason training regiment where we’ll have some really good community members involved in helping build that up.

The Colts have one more RFC game on the docket as they head to Brooks tonight to battle the Buffalos for third place in the league. Krassman says they’re excited for another shot at Brooks and a chance to put a stamp on this season.

“We want to really try to build up for next season because this is the end of one season, but it’s also the start of another season and that’s kind of the message that we’re going into this one with,” Krassman said. “We want to go in, play a good game and we’re hoping to have some really good success.”

When they take on the Buffalos tonight, Krassman says he’ll be looking for a full game effort, doing the little things right and how players adapt to in-game adversity.

“We’ve already overcome a lot in the season but we haven’t really been able to overcome game adversity. We want to see if we can come out, maybe try to get a lead early and see if we can sustain the drives,” Krassman said. “And if we don’t get a lead early, let’s see if we can bounce back and be resilient in the game situation. We’ve been resilient all season when it comes to coming back after a loss and let’s see if we can have some resiliency coming out and putting it down for a win.”

Whether or not the Colts pull out a win tonight in Brooks, Krassman says they will take another step in building up football at McCoy and in Medicine Hat.

“Building is not all about the wins and losses, it’s about building those kids’ resiliency and character and building the confidence, that’s a big one,” Krassman said. “Some of our kids, especially after what’s happened in the world the last couple of years, confidence is a big thing. We’re starting to see a little bit more in the system, the kids coming out of their shells and those in their first year of football who are becoming football players and are optimistic.

“So I’m very excited about the future of this program.”
